Removing gear oil from carpet?

Featured Replies

  • Super User

I had the wrong shop rebuild the power head on my boat and when I finally got my boat back, among the places where my boats gel coat had been damages I found out my front deck had been soaked in gear oil. I've tried many things and I'm one step away from ripping out the carpet and replacing it. It's nasty and reeks.

Any ideas?

If the oils soaked through the carpet unfortunitly you probably need to remove it and clean the deck surfaces, then replace the carpet.

You can try renting a commercial carpet cleaner to remove all the oils and grease before ripping up the carpet.

You can carry a can of break cleaner, I had a kid i use to work with got oil all inside a customers car seat and i used break cleaner to lift it and put a dry cloth over it to soak it up, did it a few times and worked like a charm.

Thanks for the replies. I'm removing the carpet and have the deck clean. There was so much gear oil that the backing had come apart. So, along with new carpet I'm going to install a trolling motor pedal tray and extend the deck. Still have 2 weeks before the Hot Water Series fires off. Should be plenty of time.

I kinda live in your neighborhood - my current dealer/mechanic has gotten old and quit the business.  I'm looking for a new one.   If you would please pm me and let me know the name of the shop that spilled all the oil, I could cross one off my list.

I'd rather not say. I will say US Boatworks and Truman Lake Marine have both done great work for me.
