Trout fishing tips

Featured Replies

Going to a local lake this saturday to fish for stocked trout. Any tips you guys might be able to give me. Baits, rigs and or set up. Only own two baitcasters.

The basic lake rig is similar to a Carolina rig except 2# or 3# fluorocarbon or mono leader.

What you need;

1/2 oz egg sinker (or bullet weight).

Small swivel clip  (8mm glass bead is optional to keep the weight hole away from the swivel).

3' long leader. 4' leader with 12" dropper is optional for 2 baits.

Size 14 or 16 gold treble hooks.

Jar of trout Power bait, color of choice (chartreuse/Orange is good).

You simply cast and let the weight lay on the bottom. Prop your rod up using a forked stick or stake type rod holder. Take up the slack line to feel the weight and let sit.

You will need a hook removal tool as trout swallow the bait hooking themselves.

Set your drag using a scale at 1 1/2 lbs to prevent breaking the leader.

Make a small dough ball about 3/8" dia to cover the hook, that's it!

Good luck,

Tom

PS standard clinch knot works good with light line.

Limiting factor is baitcasting outfits.

If you have capable baitcasters use #3 size in-line spinners those produce very well for stock trout. Most #3 size are usually 1/4oz.

The Blue Fox Vibrax Bullet though you can get #2 size that is 1/4oz and the #3 size is 3/8oz. So a littlle more weight with smaller blade size.

There are other factors here too.

Big lake or smaller pond?

Fishing from bank or boat?

What's the typical size of the fish there?

How often do the fish get stocked?

@mrpao smaller pond

Fishing from bank

Weekly.

Since they stock it weekly, I would try to fish it the day of stocking or the day after. The most number fish and they'll be hungry from the truck ride.

The other two guys have given pretty good advice already. I would add to that small crankbaits and jerkbaits.  Throw them out a retrieve in slowly. Since these are hatchery trout, there is no reason to try to match the hatch. Brighter colors seem to work good.

Just try different things until you find something that works. Somedays they want power bait, other days they want different lures.
