What braided line to use for hand tying jigs?

Featured Replies

I want to start hand tying jigs, buzzbaits, and spinnerbaits but I am not sure what lb braid to use to do so. Most of the jigs are about 1/4 oz - 3/4 oz, buzzbaits and spinnerbaits around 1/4 oz - 1/2 oz, but the most common weight for all being 3/8 oz.

"smalljaw" has some videos on YouTube for beginning jig tying, and I think he addresses the braid he uses and the glue as well as the "tools".

Fly tying thread is what I use, allows plenty of wraps before building up into too big a wrap.  Followed by a good, hard, head cement.  I like UV curing epoxy, Solarex blue.

Fly tying thread and Sally Hanson hard as nails for the top coat over the thread

A couple of turns of copper wire, twist strands together, clip off and fold flat, job done.

You can use what ever size line you want or any type of thread.  They all will work.  However, wire tying is a lot faster, easier and more permanent.  Plus you dont need a bobbin or whip finisher.  Floral wire is cheap, easy to find and works great.

For whatever it's worth I use six or eight lb braid and I usually get it at sportsman shows.  It's cheaper and I can get a lot for next to nothing.

nylon upholstery thread

I use 24ga floral wire in a green color.  Works great, just twist with a needle nose and cut
