Tatula Elite vs Dobyns Champ

Featured Replies

I’m looking for another Jig rod and I have a Tatula Elite rod right now and i’m looking at the 7’3” HF Omari pitching rod because i love my tatula elite rod I have. However, I have 2 Dobyns’s fury’s and I love them just as much which is why I am curious about the Dobyns Champ XP. Which rod would would be a better overall rod for jigs? The extra $70 is not a problem for the Dobyns Champ if the extra performance is there.

i cant speak for the champ XP, but i have the 7'3 MH Ehrler and the 7'3 H Omori and they are probably my favorite rods that i own. the tatula elite blow's almost every rod in that price point out of the water along with a ton of $200+ rods

Good to know, thank you. The 7'3" heavy is a one piece blank right ?

I have both, and I would say the Daiwa is more sensitive. Both are nice rods though.

I have the Champ xp and the Tatula elite. Performance they are the same IMO. I think the Dobyns is more comfortable and balanced most likely due to The longer handle..and I prefer that. Both are good sticks.

I never fished a Tatula Elite, or Champion XP 744c, but I do have a regular Tatula and Champion XP 734c and did have a Kaden 744c, and I would think about looking at an Expride for the same price instead. The Expride will weigh about .8 oz less, be more sensitive and have more power than the Dobyns. Unless warranty is a big factor, then you can't beat Dobyn's warranty. There's a big jump in sensitivity from the Champion XP to the Extreme HP/Xtasy rods, at least in my opinion.

Wow are you saying the furys are  as good as the Tatula elite?

The Tatula Elites I've owned were amazing (Jig Skipping rod and the Omori Pitching rod).  The Omori was great for dragging jigs in 5-15 FOW.  It also made for a really nice moderate cover frog rod.  I sold both because I just couldn't get past the silver color...it was distracting to me but that is purely personal.

My experience with Dobyns is hit or miss.  I had a Sierra 703 spinning rod and a Champ XP 734 casting rod.  Both felt totally dead.  Some guys say the Champ XP 744 is really good for jigs but I've never used one.  I will say that the Champ Extreme DX745 is absolutely amazing for jigs.  It's my current jig rod and I couldn't be happier with it.  I also have a Champ XP 736 for frogs and I'd have to say it is the best frog rod I've used so far.

I'd also recommend the Expride series, the 7'2 MH I have is a really versatile rod.  The 7'2 H and 7'6 H are really nice as well.

Completely agree with the Champion and Expride evaluation.  The champions are absolutely fantastic for moving baits, balanced with a tip to backbone transition that keeps fish pinned.  Once I used the Exprides for bottom contact though, I don't want to go back to the muted "sensitivity" of the Champions.  At the same price, it's a no brainer for me to choose the expride, but Dobyns ends up on sale more often and if you get them @ $180 the price/performance calculation gets a little more complicated for me.

Currently, I'm lucky to be able to afford both and I don't see me taking a 3/4oz california swim jig off of my 735c or a 1/2oz grass jig off of my 7'6" MH Expride for a few months.

I hear great things about the Tatula series, but haven't been able to fish them yet.
