Drop Shot Marabou

Featured Replies

Anyone have any instructions or a link to a tutorial for how to make what is shown in the video below at 17min 13sec? Or if some place sells them, I will just buy some. The guy in the video talks about how they are going to be available for purchase but I contacted him and he said it was a bust.

Easy peezy upon first inspection. Marabou should be available at any fly shop or bass pro shops. Do you have any experience tying flies or jigs? You just wrap thread around a hook shank and from there the creativity begins. A marabou fly like shown at 17:13 looks quite simple, just start laying material on the hook and secure it with the thread. When you’re done, either use a whip finish or several half hitches. I used to tie marabou and duck feather jigs without a vice or thread, just held it all in my hands and used mono instead of thread. They still caught fish. Don’t be intimidated by trying to make your own, it’s easier than you think and the fly/lure in the video has to be one of the easiest things I’ve ever seen to make. Most flies have 12-15 different steps where that marabou is basically a one step fly

Yes, I hand tie my own jigs and just started tying bucktails and preachers. I have a vise, bobbin, and some marabou. I tried to tie something like in the video a couple times but I didn't  like them. Does that look like it's one feather wrapped around or several?

It doesn’t matter if you like them or not! Haha. I think what he used is several of the feathers from the outside part , not the very center that you would use to make the tail of a wooly bugger but several strands of the fluffy stuff around the outside edges. I think he used the whole inner feathers for the “trailers” of the football heads. I love that guys channel

Based on the size of the hook and the look of that I'd say it is 2 feathers. Now, the first thing is to have the right marabou, wooly bugger marabou won't look right, blood quill marabou is what you want. Now before you tie your feather, pull the very tip off of it to keep it from having the "paintbrush" look. You can also strip the fibers off the stem and then stack them and tie the marabou on that way. I'll do one on my YouTube channel in the next day or so.

My preference is a rabbit zonker strip tied in a streamer pattern on a 1/0 2x long down turned eye hook.  (tip: very lightly weight the hook shank before tying on the zonker strip.

What he said and if you want it to flare out even more get the cross cut rabbit strip

@smalljaw67 Thanks for the quick video! This totally gives me the knowledge I need to make one of these. I was totally  off base initially  and can see why I wasn't happy with my end product. Thank you!
