10lb Braid Vs 50lb Braid

Featured Replies

I am new to using braid.  I was wondering if using 10Lb Braid would make less noise than 50lb Braid?

Are you casting or spinning? I’m assuming casting since you are going from 50# to 10#... has me a little thrown off.

Spray the line with a treatment and it will quieten down.

It might but not by much if you use same 4 ply braid like Power Pro original, try soft braid 8 ply like PowerPro super slick, daiwa J-braid x8 and the noise cut down tremendously.

You posted right before I did

What type of line are you using?

A 4 carrier braid like power pro original is noisier than an 8 carrier braid like power pro slick 8.

I prefer the original power pro. It is a little more manageable in my opinion. The minimal noise doesn't bother me.

If you were using 50 pound braid on a spinning reel, that was a little overkill. I am sure it was a little noisy.

Ppersonally 10 pound is a little light for my taste. The small diameter is prone to wind knots.

I use 15-20  pound on my spinning reels.

I mean, 50lb would be really heavy on a spinning rod, but it's the most used size for bass on casting gear by a wide margin.

I’m surprised to hear that.   Heaviest I go is 30# for pitching into wood.  I’m in the northeast and I don’t see that heavy of line being used.

does it help with casting performance?

Get to places with heavy grass like Florida and 80lb isn't uncommon. 50lb is a good diameter for casting gear for casting distance and performance. I flip a lot of water willows, even 50lb doesn't get everything out of them.

gotcha now!    I’ll have to gear up for my trip to Florida this year.   Heading to the Tampa area.

As someone from Florida, I think anything over 50lb is overkill, even in matted vegetation. If you break off, you're doing something wrong. Also, enjoy your trip. Don't stay too long tho, we're overcrowded as is ?

You must not be fishing the right places buddy. I've broken off 65lb on my 8ft punching stick before. It gets real in FL.... real quick!

I have seem some of the fishing spots in Florida, and I have to agree. It makes anything we have up here in the northeast look tame. That isn't to say it's all like that.

As far as the original question, I am not sure but I would honestly think fatter braid would be louder going through the guides since it will likely hit the guides more. But I will say 8 strand braid is generally pretty quiet.
