how to fish horney toads?

Featured Replies

I did a search on how to fish horney toads with no results.I would like to know how to rig it and the best way to fiesh it.Do you use an off set or stright shank hook.I have never used them and so I bought some green pumkin and 5/0 hooks  can you help. Thanks Bob

Zoom makes a special Horney Toad hook that screws into the nose of the bait.  The most popular size would be 5/0.  A 5/0 EWG would work if you don't have access to the horney toad hooks; you might have some issues with the toad sliding down the hook though.

I alway use the horny toad hook, which works really well. Its a pretty versatile bait, so the way your gonna fish it is going to vary by the conditions of the body of water your fishing.

If i am fishing thick lily pads i usually start off by swimming it right along the edge of the pads, then i will kinda bounce it along the outside edge of the pads just jerking it up then letting it fall back down, then i will actively fish the surface of the lily pads, making sure to let it sink down in any holes in the pads.

If the aquatic vegetation doesnt actually reach the surface, i will usually swim it right about the top of the plants, and then just slowly work it through the plants.

Hope this helps and makes sense

I couldnt find any spacific hook for it so I bought 5/0 soffset worm hooks wide gap,I have some 5/0 stright maby with super glue that will work.

The 5/0 hook should work fine. I fish them mostly like a buzzbait just casting them and reeling them back in across the top of the water. But under the water they look great too if yo fish them like a worm the little feet kick out and look great

I have seen the bleedin' series 5/0 wide gap horny toad hooks at Dicks and they look good, but I have gotten away with using both regular 4-5/0 EWG hooks and straight shank hooks.  They do tend to let the toad slip down after you catch a few fish but I will sometimes combat that by running a toothpick through the head of the toad, through the eye of the hook, then out the other side and snip off the excess which will help hold it in place.  I love using them over lily pads, thick grass in contact with the surface and other thick cover. I have also caught bass by letting the toad fall after bringing it to the edge of pads or other cover, let it sink, then start swimming it like a real frog, like what Spnerbat101 posted earlier.

Try crawling them very slowly over the bottom.I've caught some really nice bass using that method.
