Braid vs mono as backing on a bait cast reel

Featured Replies

I seem to remember a post on here with guys discussing using braid vs mono for backing on a bait cast reel and for the life of me I cannot find it anywhere. Possibly the topic came up in another thread no titled this and that is why I cannot find it. Can anyone find it or give me your thoughts on this topic and we can start a new discussion?

I haven't tried the braid backing deal yet.

Could happen though.

I dunno about a post here - but BassGeek has a vid on that.

Personally - even if you change out your backing every couple years, Big Game is still what I use. I don't trust 'cheap' braid even as a backing.

I do a tad less than a 3rd of a spool of 50lb braid as a backer. Two small 3/8" squares of Super 33 electrical tape placed 180 degrees apart on the spool before tying an arbor knot keeps it from slipping. Braid never wants to jump off the spool like heavier mono does, is lighter, and the uni to uni connection knot to the main line is slimmer than when using mono as a backer. I use it for lighter braid main lines also. Works for me.

I don't think this is the one. The one I am remembering had Tom and another guy in it arguing about if the lighter weight of braid being on the spool versus mono would allow the spool to spin faster and in turn get more casting difference or not.

Another one for you and again you started the thread.

Now THAT is the one I was looking for. Since I started it (and therefore obviously read it) I knew it was out there but could not find it no matter what search perimeters I put in. Thanks!
