New spinning reel advice please

Featured Replies

I have just received a new spinning reel I purchased yesterday. I went to put line on it and the line did not spread out to the front of the spool at all. It had a nylon washer and a metal washer on the inside of the spool shaft. I took the nylon washer off of the shaft and the spool fills up normal. If I don't use a nylon washer on there is it gonna tear up down the road? Maybe I should send it back and try another. I thank everyone in advance for your help.

Did you happen to get a small pack of washers with the reel.?  If the one you removed was thicker than the washers in the pack, try installing the thinnest washer. I'm no expert on reels, but I think you'd want a washer in there.

It didn't come with any spare ones. I am thinking that it needs some kind of washer there. I have never run into this before. I just had to ask. I appreciate your thoughts on this

May I ask which brand of reel? Seems odd, was the spool fully on the shaft? I had an Abu reel that was finicky, sometimes the spool would not seat fully on the shaft had to wiggle in sort of.

I wouldn't think it would hurt anything by removing the washer if the line lay is now proper and even. Might want to return it though just for peace of mind.

It's a Kastking 4000 centron. The spool is all the way on there. I have bought several different reels from them and until now they all work just like they're supposed to. If I leave the washer out it's a metal on metal contact. It might not be a problem I just don't have a clue for sure

Send it back, something is wrong.

It shouldn't be a problem.

Many older reels didn't even have any extra washers under the spool. The spool would just sit right on the spool stopper piece, which was also metal.

In fact some of my older shimano spinning reels don't even have extra washers under the spools.

The washers pretty much just help with correct line lay.

Also different lines will lay differently on a spool. I've had to add or subtract washers when switching from mono to braid or vice versa.

I appreciate all the advice. I've got to mail it back Monday. Had a lot to do today sorry to respond so late.

The spool just sits on there it won’t hurt anything. As long as it now lays line correctly you’re good. If you want to exchange it just for peace of mind no harm.
