You aren’t far from the St Joe River that runs into Lake Michigan at Benton Harbor MI.

I have no idea where you can catch a smallmouth near Valparaiso, Indiana but a quick word of warning. Not only is catching smallmouth fun it's HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!! Fish at your own risk.

Kankakee River just south of you has them.  Good luck!

Every creek, river, and several lakes in the area have them. I mainly wade creeks and rivers in central indiana for them year round with a ton of luck. Switch it up from largemouth gear and look into what baits work best. Won’t take you long to get one
