Modified hooks for poison tail

Featured Replies

Ive been playing with modifying eagleclaw lil nasty hooks to fit in my 30degree eye poisontail. I love the way this jig works through rocks and it just looks good, but the standard Mustad hook is too heavy for hair jigs. The hooks bend decent as long as i dont go too far.

Good idea.  I have the same mold and I love the bass jigs that I've made so far.  I may try what you've done here.  I modded my mold with a Dremel tool to allow a wire keeper for plastics.  Sometimes the wire will wiggle its way out of the lead if I don't pour it correctly, but usually coating it all with powder paint will firm it up enough to stay in there.

If you do try it with a light wire hook. You will need to fill in the openings otherwise you will get serious flashing and your eye will get covered in lead. I use plumbers putty as i can scrape it out easily when i want to use the mold with normal hooks

If bending hooks try not to unbend them but bend them in a new spot so they do not weaken as much.

When i started doing it, i would heat them up first then bend them below the eye bend. I was having issues with bending them straight however. The lil nastys i found are actually maleable enough to bend without heating. I take needle nose and grab them between the eye and the bend and with moderate force i pull the hook point back. Its a feel thing. 3/0 hooks bent were the easiest and i could get them closer to a 30 degree bend. The 2/0s were a different story there is a fine line for how much pressure you can apply and how far you can go. I figured out that i had to stop at around a 45 and if i was too forcefull the hook would snap. I probably snapped the first 4or 5, and then 4-5 more throught out. I ended up bending roughly 30 2/0s. I bent another 18-20 3/0s with no breakages.

Smalljaw67 discovered that Owner's TwistLOCK Light fits the Poison Tail mold, and that's what I'm using even though it's a whole lot more expensive than the standard Mustad 91768 NP-BN.

These poorly painted Poison Tails are 1/8 oz. with 1/0 hooks. I modified the mold with high temp silicone to gain a bit more straight shank length to secure hackle or whatever. In the near future I'll post an article with pics on how to do this mod.

Now that you mention it, i remember @Smalljaw67 mentioning those hooks before when i was looking for a lighter wire solution. Look good. There is definitely a difference there. Know what you mean about gaining hook distannce, ive been cutting off the secondary holder myself. Ive also started crimping down the 1st ridge if i want to lay my hair more flat.

Thank you for mentioning that!  I may look into getting some for my mold, although I have had great results with the normal Mustad hooks.

Look into the Mustad 32724BLN.
