Won a new used reel

Featured Replies

Just picked up a silver max on eBay for 25 bucks shipped.  Think I’m gonna use it for swim jigs .  This is actually the first used reel I’ve bought.  It actually looked brand new.  How do you guys handle getting a used reel?  What’s your Standard operating procedure as far as a getting a used one ? Do you tear it completely down and give it a once over or screw it and fish it.

its only a silver max but, I’m just wondering in the future if I buy a nicer used reel.

I would at least take it apart and see if its clean inside and give it a drop of oil on the bearings

First thing I do it RIP the whole thing apart, deep clean everything. I soak the bearings, gear and pinion and worm gear in isopropyl alcohol for a day then oil, grease and back together she goes. I try and replace the drag washers at this time if they look worn aswell as any bearings.

If it feels good, put it on a rod and use it. Unless you like to / have time to   take a reel apart then do that. It's a $25 reel. After all, what do you do with the extra parts after you put it back together?

Have purchased a few used reels.  I use them.   When I send some reels out for cleaning and/or tuning, I will often send some of the used reels along with the others.

What size swimbaits are you looking to throw?  I have a silver max but wouldn't throw anything over an ounce on it.

I have plenty of time at the moment.  I have been laid off for the last 2 weeks. Untill the big three get going again as we supply power tran components to all three plus a couple foreign ones.

same

Depends. Some I’ve torn apart and cleaned thoroughly. Others just went straight on a rod. If it looks new chances are it hasn’t seen much use.

Definitely! I agree.

I bought a used Power Max for $30 shipped.
I put it on a rod and went fishing. Put it on a like new Duckett Ghost 7-3 MH I paid $40 for.
It’s a dadgum good $70 combo.

That’s what I’m hoping for.  I’m just putting it on my mh lighting rod.  65-70 bucks total spent for an extra rod I think it is money well spent.  I’ve never had an issue with my black max.

Silver Max’s go any where between 50-60 bucks plus shipping if bought on line.  I won’t know for sure untill I get it but, It looks like A “got a used couple times reel” for over half off.

It was a pro max. Not a power max. My bad.

Received the reel in the mail last week after taking 3 weeks to get here via usps.  It is basically brand new reel for 25 bucks I’m happy.  I haven’t used or spoiled it up yet

Maybe break open the face plate and take a quick look.  If everything looks good I'd spool it up and fish.
