Need help picking a good rod for buzzbaits and spinnerbaits what size and action do i need ? Up to $150

A lot of it depends on the size of the lures, but Medium-Heavy/Fast is what I use for 3/8oz and 1/2oz.

The 6'10' All Star spinner bait rods ( available through Academy Sports ) work good for me.  They come in various grades, at various price points.  I got 4 of them on close outs a couple of Decembers ago.   I paid $30 each.  After a couple of seasons fishing with them, they are worth the full price (under $100 as I recall ).   I wouldn't hesitate to throw a square bill on one.

 

 Later edit   .  These rods are rated as MH, but they have a little more tip than my MH jig rods do.

As labeled, All Star makes them to throw spinnerbaits with.  They work for me.

I used to think a MH Fast was ideal for chatterbaits but now believe a 7' or 7'3" MH / Moderate bait cast rod to be the better choice (such as a Dobyns Fury 705cb.)

Since I have one of those exact rods, maybe I'll give it a try with chatters this year...see how it works for me.

 

I could also try it on one of my spinning rigs - also a MH/M rod.

^^The 6'10" All Star bait cast rod $49 regular price is not bad for the intended applications (spinner bait / chatter bait) ; I would describe it as a Fast / Moderate action rod which you want for these applications . *I have one rigged up with YZH #12 lb. line on a H2O Mettle 6:3:1 bait cast reel I use for junk fishing - it actually does a variety of applications pretty darn well (considering the price point) !

I use 6'10 MH moderate Lews Speed stick on casting, works well. 

 

I can also throw a leader on and T-rig with it, versatile rod choice. Imo

My buzzbait rod is a 7’ m/h moderate

do u mean the MH or M models

I use a Daiwa Tatula 7'2 MH "Regular" (basically a mod-fast) for them. It's still a fairly fast rod but loads up well when you hook a fish.

OP didn't ask about chatterbaits, he's looking for a rod to throw a buzzbait and/or spinnerbait.

*My bad , raises a good question though as to whether you could use the same rod set up to throw a buzz bait , chatter bait and a spinner bait with ?

The one I toss spinner and chatters on that I posted top of thread? Ya, I throw buzzbaits on that as well.

   Could you? Sure you could.

   Is it a good idea? I don't know, because I like MH/F for spinnerbaits, but M/Mod for buzzbaits, and I don't use chatterbaits. I need the "give" for the fish to actually catch the hook of the buzzbait. But for the spinnerbait (which I sometimes slow roll deep) I need a strong hookset.

   That being said, I got a rod for Christmas that might (maybe) satisfy the disparate requirements. It's a Mojo Bass Glass H/M at 7'2".  We'll see ..........          jj

Med heavy mod fast rod with braid or heavier mono will even work. The only time I will go up to a med heavy fast is if I'm fishing spinnerbaits and buzzbaits in super heavy cover. Too stiff of a rod spells trouble for buzzbaits.

I really like the dobyns fury rods, I was a sceptic at  first but the actions are really good. More moderate with a soft tip, but as people say they do seem to be a power less id say more like 1/2 power less

 

For spinnerbaits and buzzbaits

I would use a 704c 7ft heavy, with mono

Or a 703c. 7ft med/heavy with braid

MHMF length is really gonna depend on your height. Brand will determine on your own liking.

I prefer a MH/F  7 foot or longer with a fast tip.  This style lends itself to long casts and hook sets with a single big hook.  I don't care for the slower tip action because the bait drag pre-loads the tip too much for my liking.

I would use a 704c 7ft heavy, with mono

Or a 703c. 7ft med/heavy with braid

*I have the Dobyns Sierra 734c and 735c. - a number of folks say the Sierra line has a "fast moderate tip" versus the "fast" tip of the Fury line (I have not compared) . Also interesting to note that there are those who prefer a more moderate action in a Buzz Bait rod than that of their Spinner Bait rod set up .

I fish from a canoe so I usually only take one or two rods, so they have to fulfill multiple purposes. 

 

I usually take a medium 6'6" casting rod for spinner baits, plugs, top water,etc. 

 

I've got a 7' MH casting rod I sometimes use for worms and frogs, but I'd tire of heaving a spinner bait or buzzbaits, or anything that's a quick cast/retrieve. 

 

I wouldn't go longer than 6'6".  I might even go shorter.  I have a pistol grip medium 5'6" rod I Iove for spinner baits.

I usually like a mh f or heavy f for spinnerbaits and buzz baits but I know that a lot of other people like a more moderate rod. I would strongly recommend getting a st croix mojo bass. You can get it in 7’1” mh f or 7’4” H f if your like me or a 7’4” Mh mf, any of those will do. I’ve never liked a moderate rod for spinnerbaits or chatterbaits. I like being able to rip weeds off of those baits and I can’t do that as well with a moderate. Also spinnerbaits chatterbaits and buzz baits all have pretty big single hooks, which to me makes me want to have as much power as I can get to get those fish in.

You don't need a high dollar rod for buzzbaits & spinnerbaits, they are going to hook them selves when they bite it. I think a 7' MH should do you fine. I don't think you need to spend $150 rod for what lures you're planning to use. But it is your money, you can get a rod & reel for $150.00.
