I’ve been trying to do as much research as possible and I am stuck between the 744 and 735 in the champion xp line of rods. I want a jig and Texas rig rod. I will 20 lb flouro Carbon so I want an extra fast tip to make up fore the stretch in my line but I don’t want the 744 to be to soft but I also don’t want to buy a 735 if it isn’t going to have a soft tip.

What weight baits and what cover are you going to be fishing around? 

 

I have the Extreme 745 and the Champion 734 (and my fishing partner has the Champion 744) so I've got some experience with these rods. 

i have a 744. its a great jig or texas rig rod. just cant do heavy heavy cover. stick with lay downs or lily pad type cover. maybe light flipping.

Well I will flip brush a lot I also fish around grass a lot I’m in high school I don’t have enough money to have super specific rod but I do jig fish a lot and through swimbaits on swimbait hooks over all I am looking fore a “power fishing“ setup 

Also I am pretty familiar with abu and st Croix rods so if you could compare it to those that would help I don’t want this rod to be as stiff as a abu medium heavy but a faster action then st croix rods

The 734 is the do it all rod. In my opinion, it is THE BEST do everything rod out there. Jigs, spinnerbaits, Keitech's, texas rigs, rattle traps, buzzbaits, chatterbaits, swim jigs. I can't recommend that rod enough for that. 

 

The 744 is the extra fast action version of the 734, so expect a different action out of it. It's going to have the same power, but more suited for jigs and texas rigs. Good for open water and light/moderate cover fishing. 

 

The 745 is going to give you more power for heavy brush and vegetation. Lots of backbone for horsing big fish out of places where you could get in trouble with lighter setups.

Ok thank you but may I ask if you could compare it to and lews medium heavy ore a abu because they are stuffed then what I want but I want stiffer then a lews rod

did you purchase yet? if so what did you get and how do you like it? I’m currently in a rabbit hole of rods for what sounds like the same purpose. I own a 7ft mh dobyns champion xp that i love, i use it for everything. I bank fish and this rod and the 6’8 expride mh are probably my favorite bank fishing rods because they can avoid limbs but are sensitive enough to fish t rigs up to and even over 5/8oz but also can throw 1/2oz jigs 3/8oz jigs etc on them and if i want i can tie on a buzzbait or lipless , spinnerbait and chatterbaits. 

 

As for the heavy cover or lily pads not super heavy vegetation as i live in maryland..... these rods don’t have the backbone i need for pulling a fish out of pads. I have a 7ft MH Avid X and it’s tip is slower than id like, it’s sensitivity is perfect , and it’s backbone is just about right too but a heavy action St Croix would probably do this perfectly. However i’m in a rabbit hole of trying to find an NRX , GLX , Dobyns really anything because i’ve looked at Kistler, Megabass, Powell, and clearly Shimano. 

 

The rod world is crazy, life was far more simple when i was only buying Bass Pro combos and Lews Combos as a kid with my employee discount lol Now i feel this constant itch to keep up with the Jones’ ??‍♂️

Well personally I would look fore a 7,2 / 7,3 fore what you are doing 7,2 would be ideal but with a 7,2 I would want a longer handle I believe that then you won’t honestly have that much rod blank swinging around compared to you’re 7 foot do to the handle being an inch longer and the advantage is that most companies will significantly beef up a rod from a 7 to a 7,2 

And I am getting it at the end of this month
