After fishing

Featured Replies

After I’m done fishing in freshwater, should I do anything to clean my rod and reel? Will the baitcaster reel corrode if I don’t clean it?Also is it ok to keep the hook on the rod or should I take that off? Thank you in advance.

Hey buddy! Welcome to the forums! If fishing freshwater, no need at all to clean after every use. After saltwater use, for sure though

Maybe a quick wipe of the rod/reel to prevent water-spots for appearance only. Modern plastics and aluminum won't corrode because of some fresh water on them.

(Shrugs) I leave lures on if I plan on using them again next trip...which for me is a week - I go once a week. Only thing I'd remove is any soft plastics (worms, craws, etc) that you have on the lure...those can cause issues with the lure itself.

I agree. I wipe down my rod and reel with a damp rag. Just to get any dirt or fish slime off them. This really helps keep Winn Grip and Cork handles looking nice.

I usually cut off any hooks or lures I used for the day. Two reasons, one I want a fresh knot next time I go out. Second reason I don’t like bend in my rods from keeping line tension by holding a lure on the hook keeper.

All Good!

One other thing..It’s a good idea to always back off your drag before you put it away.
