Central Texas, default lures?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I'm new to central Texas and hope to get out on the water here soon.  I come from east Tn and have a few things in my tackle box as is, but don't know what's applicable here and what isn't.  Add to that the fact that I didn't get out much in the last couple years and my existing lures are probably worthless.  Also, my primary experience in TN was on the lakes and I'll be fishing a lot of rivers here (San Gabriel, Colorado, Guadalupe, etc).

So, with these facts in mind, what would you use to stock the default tackle box?  Also, suggestions on where to fish or how to fish cent Texas rivers would be appreciated.  Thanks all!

Scott

ETA:  Just realized I didn't give any species info.  I'll fish for about anything, but would like advice on everything from Bass (Large and small mouth, black, white, etc) on down to panfish.  I love to fish for most everything.

Welcome Aboard!

Be sure to post this thread in the "Central" section of the Forum, too. The Texans are pretty good at responding there. I'm sure you'll get some specific suggestions, but remember, bass are bass wherever they live. Lures you have that worked a few years ago in Tennessee will work just fine in Texas.

Welcome!

One great thing about Central TX is that you can fish ANY kind of water you like!  Anything from gin clear highland lakes to swamps.  Based on the rivers you listed, it looks like you are a little south of me.  Lots of water (although most lakes and rivers are still flooded around here) I'm not much of a river guy but you can catch Guadelupe bass down there, they are awesome little fish!  (as well as many other species)  To your north, all my local lakes have largemouth, smallmouth and spots in them.

Like RW said, bass are bass... the lakes may be different but they still eat shad, craws, and other baitfish or panfish. When I made the move to Central Texas, my adjustment was to the clear waters and fishing deeper in the summer, not the fish.  Once the initial intimidation wears off you'll find that the biggest difference is probably small.  ...lol

We do tear up the local bass on the *** 3.5" beaver craws... used to use "sweet beavers" but *** is cheaper and I actually like them better (even if the price was the same)

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the help.  Nice to know I won't be starting completely over :)

With that mind, any advice on moving from large lakes to smallish rivers?  Or, for that matter, where does everyone like to fish in central Texas?

Scott
