AGM Batteries

Featured Replies

My question is are AGM batteries necessary?  I am dumb when it comes to this kind of stuff.  Is there a huge difference between AGM and regular deep cell batteries?  Like I said I don't fully understand all of this battery stuff.  I am putting a new trolling motor on my Bass Tracker 170 and it will be a 24 volt, instead of the 12 volt that is on there now.  Just wanting to understand a little better before going and buying two new batteries.

AGM absorbed glass matt is a sealed, no spill, no overflow, no adding water, no overcharging, and boiling dry maintenance free battery.  Therefore you can keep stuff in the battery compartment that you never before considered.  At least that is why I went to them 8 years ago.  They usually cost a little more but I think they are worth it.  My first set got traded with the boat when they were over 4 years old.  My second set is 4 years old and going strong.

Thank you for explaining that to me!  They do cost more and that is why I was asking for a better understanding.  But that sounds like the route I go because I definitely don't want all the maintenance!

AGM batteries are more expensive, but offer several benefits as Jig Man pointed out.

I'm currently using Optima BlueTop (AGM).

Yes you are correct and that is where I will be going to get them!  Group size wise is bigger the number the better it is?  A buddy of mine said group 31 but I see where they have a group 34 at a better price, so which to go with?

Group 34 are usually dual purpose cranking/deep cycle or non marine use batteries.

Make sure what you are buying.

The lowest price I know of was Duracell on sale at Wallmark or SAMs Club.

I have a set of VMaxTank MR137-120 AGM's for over 10'years now still working good.

Optima blue tops are made by Johnson Controls in Mexico, it's not China!

I refuse to by anything made in China if I have a choice!

Not to hijack this thread, but Amazon should be compelled to state the 'country of origin'.

(I've recently been duped).
