Gambler Cane Toad - Great Bait

Featured Replies

I picked up a bunch of these when I was at BPS recently.  They are great!  They have a fatter body than any other toad, and the boot style feet are set at the perfect angle to both gurgle when fishing the topwater, and to flap alluringly when fishing under the surface.  The body is plump and hits the water with a soft plopping sound that I have only heard when fishing the Salad Spoon.  The body has lots of ridges like a sweet beaver, and they are heavy with garlic scent and Bang attractant.  They are pretty durable too.  Their sink rate is very slow, which is something I prefer.  Hookups have been excellent as well, I am using the Zoom Horney Toady Hooks with the screw at the top of the hook.  The fish are gobbling these up in NoVa right now.   So far the Sizmic Toad has been my favorite overall producer, but I can see the Cane Toad being right up there.

I tried the Horny Toads and the Cane Toads and did not have any luck with either one.  :'(  I always end up going back to my SPRO bronzeye. I must have been doing something wrong though, because everyone on this site thinks they are great.

There are several ways to successfully fish the cane toad, but you might try this:

Simply retrieve the toad "slowly" at a "constant" rate...that's all she wrote.

Crank the toad at the slowest speed that keeps it on top and keeps the lobbed feet active.

At this provocatively slow speed, the horny toad would be heading for Davy Jones Locker.

Once you find the right stride for the cane toad, maintain a constant speed to make it easier for bass to home in.

If there's any topwater bite at all going on, you're going to get following bulges, V-wakes and unexpected blow-ups.

That failing, try burning her in like a soft buzzbait, only the cane toad will be more weedless and more mouthable than a prop buzzer

PS: Keep the toad always in the slop

ive been fishing these for a while .... as for working these baits ive had my best luck just on a slower steady retrieve ....  as for color i would just recomened getting the blk , wht , and i like the bull frog ..... this cane toad just sounds like a tank ... moving water to make a wake ,,, i just wouldent worry about too many colors .... the basics seem fine  ive had most blow ups on blk and bull frog ....

and if you like these try the ribbit too .... its not a bad frog  :)

Hey Avalonjohn44 what colors have you been having the best results on?

Brown Pepper and Watermellon pepper are the only two that I've tried so far.  I also bought a few other colors, white, black, florida 5-0, and a watermelon swirl that I haven't thrown yet.  The first two have been producing like crazy.

Rolo suggested this bait a few months back, I bought 2 bags.  Using them with the skip gap hook with great success so far.  Thanks Rog!  Stratosdadri saw how well they work last weekend, he's a believer now too!
