Boat Insurance and Breakdown-Tow Services Recommendations Wanted

Featured Replies

Buying a new bass boat and wondered if anyone has recommendations on Boat and equipment coverage in North Carolina, plus coverage for breakdown and tow services? Freshwater only of course. I have been researching on what to get coverage on (boat comprehensive vs tackle/electronics, etc) but I am not sure who is better when it comes to claims/service? I have read some horror stories but no recommendations.

Some insurance companies offer additional services such as tow and breakdown. I wonder how good is the coverage considering the dozen of lakes/reservoirs I might fish in NC?

P.S. Not sure if this the right forum but it made the most sense to me.

Progressive had the best deal for boat and equipment. Can't speak to tow service.

I don’t know anything about companies in your area.  I carry collision, liability, comprehensive, theft, and vandalism on my boat just like on my truck.  Additionally I have a writer on my equipment.

I wonder how a tow service could even work, logistically. Seems like you'd be waiting for hours and it also sounds expensive.

?

I have state farm insurance for everything nice discounts for multi line check with your company you use

I'm assuming he means if he breaks down on water. There are 2 lakes in northern IL that have official tow services on them, one being Lake Michigan and the other being my home water. Any waterfront dealer/shop should offer tows as well. If I broke down on any small inland lake with no marinas, I'd find someone or call someone to get me back to the ramp.

I am in NC and also have State Farm. They dont offer tow service on the boat like on cars, but they do have some reimbursement for it depending on yoir policy.

Insurance paying off a local service makes sense.

I remember as a kid my Dad had v-drives (he was a boat mfg so we were always boating) and those old hot boats broke down a lot in general. Someone was always around to help if we needed a tow. Conversely I remember us towing boats as well.

Of course there will be times where nobody can help you like that. Thanks for the responses.

@slonezp I'm assuming he means if he breaks down on water.

Correct. My brother-in-law boats exclusively on Lake Norman (ski boat) so he has a membership with Seatow. Unfortunately companies like Seatow and BoatUS don't appear to cover all of the major lakes in NC; hence my question.

Progressives Sign and Glide boat assistance services uses a company called Compass Marine Services. No idea if they are good or not. I hope I don't have to find out the hard way.

Regardless I will have some quality marine rope on-board and ready should the need arise for myself or someone else. Thanks to everyone who responded.
