Advice on line fraying

Featured Replies

I have a Hobie outback pedal drive and absolutely slay the smallies trolling jerkbaits and jerking as I go. I made 3 extended trips in the past 2 weeks and probably got over 200 fish. Most others were not having luck. Regardless, while I am catching fish I have discovered one downside. I typically cast back the same distance each time so I am constantly jerking on the same part of the line. The second day of each trip within 2 minutes of jerking my line snapped and there goes a megabass. Do you have any suggestions? I switched from 8lb to 10 lb yozuri hybrid. I don’t really want to go higher than 10. Maybe a rod that is known for having a really smooth tip? Figured I would come to the experts here.

Here are some pictures from the trips.

Where is the line breaking? Make sure none of your guides has a nick or rough spot.

Most of the time the cracked insert will be in the tiptop.       jj

The line is breaking right where it’s constantly rubbing against the rod tip when I am jerking it.

You said you were dropping out the same amount of line each time and unfortunately, you are creating a wear pattern on probably a 5-10ft section of your line, maybe even smaller than that.

Even if you had perfect eyes and there were no nicks anywhere. You are creating a wear pattern in the same spot. Think of it as bending a wire clothes hanger. Eventually physics happens, with ugly results.

I dont have answer to stop it, aside from maybe marking that area with a Sharpie and trying to alleviate that wear area.

If your catching that many fish.  Maybe every 20 fish peel 10 ft of line and cut off and re-tie.  I do this after 3-4 trips to mono and flouro.  After a heavy day of fishing I make sure to at least glance over or feel my line for knicks or weak spots.  Smallies like the ones your catching will wear equipment over time plus when they dive into snags. Or when you get hung up

After doing some research I think I just need a more abrasion resistant line than yozuri hybrid. I don’t think it will permanently fix the problem but it will alleviate it. From my research it seems as if p-line cxx and Big game are the most abrasion resistant. Any thoughts on that?

No, I don't think that's your problem, nor the solution.

I'd double check the tip-tip for a groove or nick - the old Q-Tip test is a good way. I use YZH on four of my rigs and the only line I've lost is either through re-ties or the one time a pike bite off a lure.

I get what you are saying. It happens on all of my rods and my buddy’s brand new Legend Elite’s. I don’t think many people fish this way (at least I don’t see them).

I have had days where I don’t catch many and it still frays. I am still jerking the whole day.

I am hoping with more abrasion resistant line I won’t have to change out that part of the line after every outing. Maybe every other outing.

It's the line being stressed for repeated use. Yo-Zuri isn't a line I use but with that said it's inexpensive so pull off 75 yards and respool each trip.
