Both are bizarrely low end and dated looking for their pricetag.  Is the current Avid really 20 years old?

Yes. Slight changes . basically the same.

Does anybody have anything else they highly recommend over these for an all purpose rod in this 250 price range?

My top 3 choices would be Expride, Expride, and Tatula AGS

Instead of the Avid X 7' MH Fast.....  the regular Avid 7 M' Fast.  This rod is more versatile to me and fishes more like a MH.  It also seems more sensitive and less tip heavy but the MH is not too bad when it comes to being tip heavy.  You just need the correct reel.
