Father's Day trip

Went out this morning at just about sunrise to a lake that has been closed since February.  I really wanted to get on the river but with al the rain they are gonna be blown out for a little while.  Anyways, I arrived in a dense fog , left in a downpour, and the lake was up probably 2' or more.  The grass that normally is subsurface was move the surface a good bit so I am guessing that meant the water was even higher when it originally sprouted.  It made me paddle through an area that, see pic below, that felt more like i was on my front lawn than on the lake.  Lilly pads were also a solid 18-24" above the surface in most areas.

Started the day out throwing a spro popping frog i picked up.  Never fished one before so I figured I would give it a shot.  Had a few hits but couldn't hook up.  Normally my hookup percentage is pretty solid so i was thinking it was the frog.  Switched out to some off brand one and had a few hits and misses then a buzz  toad and same deal....guess they didn't want a frog today enough to actually get hooked.

Picked up a few on a fluke, crank bait and a popper but it wasn't until I switched over to the jig that it really picked up.  I ended up catching 16 in about 6 hours of fishing.  Nothing big but all were solid fish.  I will be interested to see if next time i usr the Spro frog if my hookups are better....

it was crazy, I have fished this lake for over a decade and have never seen it like this before.  I tried punching which was working from a technical standpoint but i wasn't catching anything as that is a completely foreign technique to me so I may not have been hitting the right areas.  I almost wanted to climb out and look underneath to see how open it was underneath lol

I’ll give credit for sticking it out. Many would have called it a day. Punching is a foreign technique to me as well. I would have been stumped.

well i didn't punch too long.  I paddled through it and made it to a culvert between the two lakes.  Te culverts were half blocked so the water level in that lake was pretty high but water was moving through, almost waterfall like, at a decent clip.  This created a semi open spot that i was ablate exploit with a jig for the majority of my fish on the day.
