Clearlake, CA

Featured Replies

Booked a trip to Clearlake, CA with the wife before things get worse up in NorCal and everything shuts down again. Anyone recently come from there and can provide any tips or firsthand reports? Read a few reports on Westernbass..probably will mainly be fishing jigs and some finesse stuff. Some frogs early AM and maybe toss some big glides and deep cranks. Weather reports looking like it’ll be in the high 90’s all week ?. Also will be fishing out of a kayak, so being able to move around a bit shouldn’t be a problem. Thanks BR!

Yeah, figured I’d ask on here anyways since I was logged in already lol

I'm no help, I haven't been in over a decade.  We rented a 'cabin' there.  My wife wouldn't let the kids swim at all after she saw something big submerge one evening by the docks.  She swore it was an alligator, lol.

Looking back it was probably a beaver or the like.

If I was you I'd stop at the local shop there.  The owner knew all the latest trends.  If he's still there.

sorry no update from this year, I was there last year during this time...well earlier in July.  Fish were all around as long as you avoided the bad algae blooms and found cleaner water.  I'd use that as a determining factor on where to launch from.

WON is usually about 2 weeks behind what is current.

Suggest calling a local guide (Larry Hemphill) they are usually helpful and Dan at ReelEX is on top of what is going on at Clear Lake.

I haven't fished at clearlake recently but have been fishing at lake pillsbury which is not too far away, and the bite is on fire there. I caught a 7.5, a 4.5, and 5 3s in a few hours there on monday.

Appreciate it man, thanks!

My buddy is a guide on that lake, and he has been catching them from 0-30’. He told me typical shallow lures and typical deep lures. He had 22lbs last Saturday.

Algea bloom is always a problem during the summer.

Hope you called before making the trip.

Well just got back home. Clearlake during the algae bloom is definitely interesting. Drop shot with a MMII Roboworm was the only thing consistently working shallow or deep. Jigs were hit and miss, didnt get much action on frogs, although I did manage to get my biggest bass of the trip on a frog..a measly 4 pounder lol. Also got a surprise when a catfish hammered my Deps Bullshooter ??

How many fish did you get in total?  My buddy went about a month ago and said the bite was on all day. I'm not exactly where on the lake he fished, but he has a boat.  I guess there is a long stretch of lily pads one one area for top water.

Sorry about the algae bloom.  looks nasty!!

Maybe up on the northern side of the lake, we were fishing mostly the south side and the middle. Probably like 30ish in total for me. Nothing too big, probably would’ve had more but I just hate drop shotting especially for long periods of time.
