Question about line coming off a Daiwa Tatula LT..

Featured Replies

So I finally got a Daiwa Tatula LT 2500D-XH!

So I go to fill up the spool with some 8# mono, put about 200 yards on the stated 240 yard capacity spool.     I noticed before the first cast I had a few loops of line down the spool and wrapped around.    While fishing this evening I had it happen twice, just a couple of loops but in this picture it looks like at about 200 yds that spool is almost overfull now.

I put it on with the line spool on the floor, coming off counter-clockwise, then took the spool off  and put the line in some very warm water for about 10 minutes.

The loops dropping down and with the spool looking full at 200 yards what could I have done wrong?   Ideas, thoughts?

First of all, congrat for your new Tatula, you made a good decision.

The line capacity rated on Daiwa mostly for Japanese Line which might be smaller diameter than US rate line. Which mono line are we talking here? 200 yds is still plenty of line for any fresh water fishing.

Secondly, you shouldnt drop the whole spool  in very worn water, that might damage the drag system either felt or carbon.

Great reel. Might just be the pic, but to me, the line looks to be a tad loose. Did you add some tension when you spooled it up.?

And ditto on not dropping the spool in warm water.

Hi there. It is some trilene big game 8 in green. What I had, to have the 240 I thought I needed but stopped short when I saw it filling up to what looked like too much.  It’s listed as .27 and the specs are using .23.    I guess that would be enough difference to cause a problem.

I had no idea about that and just went by the box/spool side.

About the water - I had seen several on YouTube mention doing that to help the line relearn perhaps.   I did not completely submerge it so hopefully I’m ok.

I'm still lost as to what good rod to use with it; I’m wanting maybe a 7’ MF for finesse, top water and some spinners.   I’m using an inexpensive carbon fire speed stick by lews for the moment.

I did hold it with light tension when spooling but also it seems I have overfilled it.  See above message.   That might be the issue here.  Also the water part - I didn’t completely submerge it so I hope I’m ok !     Thanks for the reply.

If you can find it, the Tatula original TAT701MFS rod would be a good match with your new Tatula LT. Otherwise try Tatula XT 7’ M or ML.

I have Tatula original 7’ Medium Fast pair with Daiwa Ballistic FW LT 2500C and couldn’t be happier. This is my finesse setup.

Spool looks overfilled and the line looks a bit loose probably from retrieving slack line while fishing. I would also ditch big game on a spinning reel and use 6-8lb trilene xl or 15lb braid

agreed with the line settling down it looks overfilled now which will only cause more problems for you.  I'd take off maybe 10-20 yards or so to reduce it down.  Head to the lake and put something heavy on and throw it as far as you can...if you have a boat just drop the line behind you as you are moving.  Wind it up again on the spool tight and let it sit for a week or so and the line memory should follow the spool.  Also the KVD line conditioner is another option and works pretty well

Thank you for the ideas.  I will look around for them. Thanks for sharing the pic nice!!

I plan to put some xl 8 that I got for 5 per 330yd roll today.    I took off about 25 yards and it looks much better    Downpour all evening which killed my plans for tonight lol.

I took off 25.   Looks better now.  I bank fish so I may put on a top water frog.  That’s good for a long distance cast.  That should help for the time being.    I would like to get a mini bass boat at some point.   Thanks for the suggestions.

First bass on the tatula lt and a carbon fire lews that I am using for the time being.   I did t get to weigh it but have a scale in the way.  Any ideas on size?

Couple more of my first fish on the reel.  Is it normal for the tail to be red? Some pics here I don’t see that.

What line did you spool laying flat on the floor label down coming off counterclockwise?

If the mono line is over .010 D you have a problem.

It says .027mm.   .010 would be .0254.   The trilene big game 8 which I had handy at the time.

.011D is pushing a 2500 spool diameter. BG has allot of memory, good line on a bait caster, marginal on 2500 spinning reel IMO. You spooled correctly, prefer the spool on a mandrel comming of the bottom. You basically over filled the reel too loose.

It appears you corrected the loose and over filled line. A good line condioner ( not Real Magic) should help you.

Spool looks much better now.   So the xl 8 I have is also .011 so that size would be better suited for a 3000 if I understand correctly?  I also have a roll of stren original 8 which also states .011.

Sunline Super Natural mono is inexpensive $7 for 300 yds and good line. 8 lb is .009D, 10 lb is .010D.

Ok thank you.   If I were to get a 3000 spool, would I be able to use this .011 stren and trilene xl without problem?

  • Super User

You can't change spool diameter without changing the reel.

Use the line you have until you need new line then try Super Natural 8 l or 10 on line.

Using braid with a leader of larger dia is another popular solution.

@WRBmight be right, even the 2500 and 3000c use a lot of same parts and body but I think rotor or bail parts is a little bit different(about 5-6parts), I don’t remember. Unlike 1000 and 2000, all the parts are the same except spool. If you like give me a day or two to compare that parts.

ok thanks.   Lookig I see a tatula 3000 spool still calls for .25 at the listed capacity for 8#.   So I see it wouldn't do me any good to get a 3000 spool even if it would fit my 2500.

Wondering why these reels show a capacity with 8# and xxx yards when it lists a diameter that isn't something readily available in off the shelf stren, trilene xl and the like?  They all seem to be .011/.27

Those are just guide line not mandated and mostly japan standard not wired US. Using which line diameter is up to you. Don’t worry you don’t need 240 yds not 160yds even for regular bass fishing. You not gonna see the end of you line, I guarantee it. Like @WRBmentioned just use whatever line you have until you need new line, then you go smaller diameter or even upgrade to braid. You will see it soon enough why ppl recommend smaller and soft line or even braid for spinning.
One thing with spinning reel, you have to keep them 3/4 full to get the most distance, once the line go below 2/3 - 1/2 full, the distance would suffer a lot and need to bring the line up. The line that sit on bottom unused gonna twisted like crazy and not suitable to use again. That why you don’t need so much line on spinning only 70-100yds is good enough. Leave the rest of those line as backing, respool with new main line when needed. To help main line even further, you can get “line conditioner” like KVD one spray on to line overnight before fishing trip.

There are plenty of video from our own Bassresource dealing with spinning and line twisted. Subscribe if you haven’t.

That helps with my anxiety about the line capacity, I appreciate it.   I'll drop about 100 or 125 yards on it and sleep well about it.   I will check out those videos you left for me.   Suggestions well taken, have a great day.
