bluegill

Featured Replies

Can anyone explain to me why bluegill, seem to be so much more adaptable and effective at surviving than bass? You can find bluegill nearly everywhere, they seem much better at being able to survive than bass do.

Even adult bluegill can survive on the smallest organisms. An adult bass requires larger prey items to survive effectively. There aren't many places a bluegill can survive that a bass can't if there is the proper forage available.

^^^ this.

A huge 10” bluegill can thrive on small forage like insects. That food source is abundant pretty much everywhere.

Can you imagine the fight a 5 lb. bluegill would put up? Lb. for lb. they are a top-tier fish on a hook. A 5 lb’er on UL tackle would be a joy.

so i do quite a bit of urban creek fishing. If theres fish in there, its almost always bluegill. I was just thinking like man, why arent there at least some tiny bass in there as well. Maybe the bluegill out compete them. So the wildest thing happened the other day, i caught a crappie in a drainage ditch behind a apartment complex. pretty cool because it was a wild fish, not stocked. crappies are rare here in socal in public stocked lakes. Let alone a ditch.
