how shallow can i go in a fiberglass boat

Featured Replies

hello, i had an aluminum flat bottom boat before and i could get real shallow, i recently got a ranger with a 150 on it, on 1 of the lakes i fish theres this cove that has spots of 2-3 feet of water, can the boat get in there without getting stuck? i will probably have to tilt the motor up, i just dont want to get stuck. tia

About 10-12" if you are careful and don't overload it. Depends on the hull design, but most will float in a foot of water.

I had no problem in 2' of water in my 15' boat with a 90 HP on it this past weekend.  I just trimmed the motor up and kept an eye out for anything that could hang me up.

Probably a good idea to get a keel protector if you are planning in fishing in water that skinny.

I just don't look at the hull when it's on the trailer. Makes me sleep a little better. LOL

I second the Keel Guard.  Most boats will float in a foot of water, but some brands  will go skinnyer.

'Til you hit the bottom.

hope you have a good push pole if you plan on going much skinner that 12" TM's don't like pushing mud and rocks ;D ;D

Just go slow and you won't hurt anything if you're tm starts hanging up back it out. You'll have to experiment to find out how shallow your boat can go, its valuable to know for future reference. Its good to know how deep you can run on the main motor too...

I'm in a 21' Skeeter with a 225 +jackplate and was in 12" of water yesterday and no problems. Honestly though, alittle nerving seeing the bottom so close.

I've been in about a 1 1/2ft of water in my 185 stratos with a 150hp Johnson on the back (tilted up) and never hit bottom with the boat. The trolling motor hits though.

Like the previous posters I can get down to around a foot of water.  Before I drop the trolling motor I always trim up my outboard so this isn't an issue.  I fish lakes with lots of timber just under the surface so the big motor has to be up.  In water this skinny you have to raise the trolling motor and hold it there to move around, or you can place an object of some sort between the folding bracket plates to hold the motor shallower.  If you do this, just remember that since your trolling motor isn't locked down it could rise up out of the water.
