Share your thoughts with me on next rod I’m getting

Featured Replies

Looking at the Shimano Clarus. Will top with a Curado 70, application is the ability to throw small lures and up to jerkbaits (110’s), lipless, squarebills, spinners all around rod sorta thing. Looking at a 6’6” medium and have option up to 6’10” medium. Other than fisherman’s preference for the shorter option when working the rod with jerkbaits what would the extra 4” add pro or con? Feel free to make any suggestion or change you recommend.

Haven’t thrown a baitcast model Clarus, but my ML spinning model Clarus is a fantastic ‘bang for the buck’ rod, and my most used, by far. Personally, I’d go 6’10” or similar if power/action is the same as it should help some with cast length as well as playing fish on smaller treble hook baits (a longer ‘curve’ involved).

For me the added length would be in the pro column. I tried a couple 6'-6" rods for jerkbaits and top waters thinking the shorter would make them easier to work from the bank. They made it easier to not occasionally smack my rod on the ground but take a bit longer motion to work the lure than a longer rod. The longer rod should cast further as well. I also despise the feel of the shorter handles on the 6'-6" rods but that's personal preference.

I use a 6'6 rod for pretty much jerkbaits only, if you can get away with 6'10 for jerkbaits I would go with that for the added casting distance for the other lures, unless you are fishing tight places.

Thank you guys. I’ll order the 6’10”. I can’t stand it, having to wait til the sales start.

I have a brand new Clarus 7 foot mh and I hate it . It is tip heavy and I cant find a  niche for it  .

For the extra $20 bucks I would step up to the SLX line up. I have three of them and like each one. I would also second on the 6'10" length, the SLX 6'10" is great for jerk baits and top water water (I have one). Tight lines and good luck, let us know which way you end up going.

I have the previous one and it's also very tip heavy, even with that metal "disc" at the bottom

TW is sold out of all the SLX rods, I’ll be lucky if they have a 6’6” or 6’10” Clarus Black Friday. On the reviews someone said the 7’ was bad but said the 6’6” was great Scaleface, might be your review.

If you can't get the Shimano, You might think about a 7' MH/F St. Croix Mojo Bass or a Dobyn's Sierra 7' MH/F.  I feel both of those rods are excellent bang for the buck rods every bit as good as the Clarus. I haven't fished a SLX.
