I once told a bass I caught him with a walleye rod. He was not too happy.

Anyway, most of my smallmouth fishing is done with a ML spinning rod, but not exclusively.

Lol! I have caught lots of big bass on inshore rods and spinning reels yet the bass don't seem to mind. That is one of the things I like most about fishing that you can fish your own way and still do well. For river smallmouth bass fishing I like to use a medium to medium heavy rod.

I use ML and M spinning rods for smallmouth. The ML rods are Ned rig, dropshot, and small paddletail/grub rods. The M rods are for small cranks/jerks, tubes, shakyheads, wacky/soft jerkbaits. Walleye

You don't need another rod, Medium Power/ Fast Action is fine.

I went with a ML for drop shotting for smallies when I bought a higher end finesse rod, but if you have a M/F rod, that will work just fine as well.

I have to drive 2 to 3 hours to get to a good smallie spot.  The biggest problem I have is not knowing what is floating down those creeks and little rivers. If there is a lot of debris then I fish with a m/f.  The rest of the time I fish with ml/f.
