Hi all,

I've purchased a Daiwa Alphas CT SV Right Handle Baitcaster (2019 model) from Japan and as spinning guy for the last 30 years, I'm always using my left hand to reel in. The seller didn't have the left hand model, but some fishermen said that the handle on these Daiwa's are interchangeable and can be moved on the other side. Unfortunately I cannot find any information on the web on how to do it myself.

Is this true? Can I change the handle from right to left? Thank you very much for your replies.

I don't know of any baitcaster that can swap the handles. Under the side-plates, the two sides are totally different. Handle side has the gears, non-handle side has the brakes. You'd have to get all new internals to swap sides - might as well just buy a left-handed reel.

You cannot find anything because this information shared was totally false.

For the Alphas CT SV., no it is not true, and no you cannot move the handle from the right to left.

 

On most spinning reels, that is true.

I do not know or recall any casting reel made in my lifetime that was left/right convertible.

Ryobi T1 and T2. I had a T2, late 90s I would guess.

 

That frame and thumb bar screams early 90s to me.  

Had a flipping switch too. Might well have been early 90s. I'm getting old.

Thank you very much for all your replies...shortly before I posted here, I've got the reply from the Daiwa Service Department, in less that 12 hours after I sent them the same question...so the customer and service department is working good and it's here to help us as well if needed: 

 

Hello.

On spinning reels the handle is interchangeable, but on baitcaster reels it is always solid one sided only. So if you want to reel in on the left side then you have to buy a left handed baitcasting reel.

VERY interesting. So it means that Ryobi reel has 2 sets of main gears and pinion gears? I wonder how much it weighs.  

No. the gearbox was on one side and there was a drive rod that went from one side to the other, the black bar below the red one in the picture, and the handle could be attached to either end of the drive rod.

I see it now, and that's a LONG shaft...
