Interference on Garmin 93sv chirp

Featured Replies

So I've ran a couple of these for a few years. Changed my trolling motor out for an 80 lb ultrex recently.  Did it myself and everything is clean and neat and nothing is exposed.  Went out today and every time id step on the button and turn on the trolling motor it would show a vertical line on my 2d sonar. If I stayed on the motor it would fade away some. I took the tray out and double checked everything while on the water and I can't figure out anything.  Read that if the power cables were touching it would cause interference so I made sure they weren't.  Any ideas before I seek a costly expert? Thanks

Yes ive been reading on it all evening.  Didn't realize interference was such a common problem.  I've got a new garmin 93sv uhd so I'm gonna install it and hope that it doesn't have the interference.  If it does I guess I'll go from there.

My older Echomap 53dv does the same thing with my Minn Kota Maxxum.  I've heard getting a ferrite core to wind the transducer wire through a couple times can help, but I haven't tried it.

EMI issues was a problem decades ago but most=new units have built in noise filters today. Go online an buy a EMI noise suppression kit of snap on cable filters, about $8.

Those Garmins come with the snap on noise suppression kits I believe.

I'll have to look but I don't remember anything like that being in the box when I bought the ones that are on it now. Haven't looked at the new one either so maybe it will have it. I'm hoping the new one works and no interference.  I'll get it installed first warmer day we get and report back

Ok so I installed my new garmin echomap 93 uhd graphs and the interference is still there. Everyone says run cables on opposite sides of boat. All mine are ran through a plastic tube together.  Im not going thru all that ill go back to a 5 speed motor first. Lots of folks say ground the skeg to the ground bus up front from the cranking battery.  Gonna try that and ask my trolling motor guy about it if that doesn't work. Also installed the ferrite ring deals that come with the units and no help. Will keep you guys informed with it. My patience level is dwindling.  Had an edge on the boat that worked just fine and my buddy basically gave me the fortrex when u got his ultrex.  Much better/powerful motor but the interference isn't gonna work. Like a dummy I sold the edge so if I go that route it'll be buying a new/remanufactured one. Always some but hopefully the ground will fix it.

Does the Garmin have a filter setting.

My hummingbirds have an adjustable noise filter setting. Makes a lot of difference with some trolling motors.
