6'6' Fenwick HMX

Featured Replies

My wife bought me a 6'6" Fenwick HMX (M) spinning rod.  it is rated 1/8-3/4 with a 4-12 line rating. She gave it to me right away since I just bought myself an Omen Black 6'7" medium spinning rod for a drop shot rig.   I don't want to disappoint her enthusiasm so my question to all is....will the Fenwick be a good jerk bait rod ?

Either rod would. They're pretty much the same specs.

Yes it would be fine for jerkbaits. Most M spinning rods do very well at jerkbait fishing and it’s what I prefer to use for my jerkbaits.

I owned that exact model of the HMX for a short period of time. It was a good rod; great sensitivity and feeling for the price. It was a bit stiffer than I expected from a M but in hindsight, seeing that the lure rating was up to 3/4 oz, that was to be expected. I especially liked the way the rod loaded up. Nice parabolic bend in the upper 1/3 of the rod but I wouldn’t say it had a “soft” tip.

My only gripe was that it kinda had some durability issues. Yea, I’ll concede that I’m rough with my gear but the cork on the handle degraded incredibly fast and the cork split under little pressure when I was tightening another reel onto the reel seat. I’ve read some reviews and it seems like that was a problem other people have had. No worries though, it was probably just a dud. I’ve owned many Fenwick rods and they’ve all been good.

I have a HMX 66M-FS-2. I think you’ll be pleased fishing jerkbaits with it.

Both rods are fairly similar. It should work well as a jerkbait rod, but there's a lot of different things you could do with each rod.

Yes it'll work well. Not too fast or slow, a good all around rod that can do alot of things adequately. The blanks on the HMG/HMX seem to be able to take alot of abuse also. I or my wife ahem* will find a way to break a rod or two on occasion & those rods seem to stand the test of time in my quiver where many other brands dont survive our wide variety of screwups.

Put U-40 sealer on the cork to see if that helps.
