Swivel for mono to braid leader?

Featured Replies

If I’m using braid as a main line and want a monofilament leader can I use a barrel swivel to attach the two? Or will this mess things up. If not, can I use a snap swivel at the then and snap my lures on or will this affect the action?

Can you specify what lures/techniques you're planning to throw on this set up?

A swivel can help to prevent line twist, but also makes casting more difficult depending on leader length.

I use a blood knot to connect the two.  Swivels, snaps and clips have no place in bass fishing.  They destroy the natural action of the lure.  If the lure came with a slip ring, use it.  Other than that...

I would direct tie the main-line to the leader - the more knots you have in the process, the weaker the whole system becomes.

If you're running a spinning reel, then a swivel might be a good idea - though I don't use them on any of my spinning rigs.

If it's a baitcasting rig - dispense with the swivel all-together.

I also don't use snap-connectors anywhere.

Blood, double-uni, FG, Albright, Alberto - there's plenty of good knots to connect line-to-leader.

Hello @JamieE and Welcome to Bass Resource ~

Incorporating a barrel swivel will work, but it's not advisable nor needed.

First off there are several easy to tie & effective leader connection knots to use.

Also, it will only be a matter of time before you reel that hardware up, into & eventually through your rods tip top guide.

There will be damage and you will make the sad face after that.

I never use barrel (Crane) swivels, but I frequently use ball bearing swivels. I use in-line spinners a quite a bit, and I "twitch" spoons, both of which cause a great deal of twist in braid. If I'm fishing someplace where I know that I'm not going to use those lures, I don't use the swivel.

So I tie a swivel onto my braid mainline, then attach a short (12-15") length of leader. @A-Jay was correct when he said to beware of pulling the swivel up into your tiptop, but the solution is simple: if you can't pay attention, then don't try it.

An alternative: I have two rods, an Eagle by Fenwick and a Heritage by Berkley, that have cheap stainless guides. Although many people run them down, they're the perfect guides to use with this type arrangement. If you choose to go this route, it helps to use a swivel that has a split ring bigger than the inside diameter of your tiptop. That way, the ring won't jam into the tiptop.

As in all things, try it and see whether it works for you.

   Good luck!    jj

Thank you all, I forgot to specify that this is for a spinning reel, and is my first time switching to braid, I already used a double uni knot to connect my braid to a monofilament backing so I think I’ll use the same knot for my leader, thanks!

I use a swivel in double fluke rig or a Carolina rig. Blade baits often come without additional hardware but you had best add a split ring or a snap or it will cut your line in short order. My old mepps inline spinners always follow a swivel...usually a snap swivel.

Even KVD sometimes uses a snap for attaching crank baits LOL

I currently have braid to leader on all of my spinning outfits except my panfish rods.

There are so many knots and everybody has their favorite. Do some reading, try a bunch and see which you like best. If I can sit down and take my time I like an FG...otherwise I tie a blood knot.

That's the best advice you can get! All of us developed our opinions by getting out there and trying different things out. That's the way life goes.   ?    jj

I use a Lefty Kreh/Seaguar knot for braid to leader.
