Ressurecting an old thread topic- just not sure if things have changed in 7 years or so. 

 

Are things still the same with repairing pitted cork handles?

1. Tape off rod 

2. lightly sand/remove chunks

3. exterior wood filler

4. dry

5. sand

6. fine sand

7. clean

8. reseal

I take a wine cork and sandpaper it to get a pile of cork shavings. Mix that with wood glue and use a popsicle stick to apply it to the pits in the handle. When it dries I use cork sealer.

No sanding/cleaning necessary?

 

I like that it will "match" the color a bit more

I have not run across a pit or crack I had to sand yet. I seal my cork and wipe the handles down with a wet cloth after every trip. Keeps them clean looking.

I know this wasn't the question, and maybe it is common knowledge. But since I started using my Expride's I found that the Mr Clean magic erasers work really well for cleaning.

Golden oak wood filler or cork dust n glue as filler. Sand very lightly 300-400 grit. Seal if desired.

Golden Oak and Natural wood filler from Elmers  has brought a few cork handles back from the dead for me.  Sand them down afterwards and the apply u40. I recently pick up Cadillac cork sealer. I sealed a rod handle with it and I think I like it better than u40, it seems to stain the cork a little deeper in color and  give it a little more of a  tacky feel as opposed to the u40. At first , I thought it was too dark, but as time goes on the darker color has really gown on me.

Guess I am off to the hardware store to buy some sandpaper.

 

I use the popsicle-stick like a trowel when applying the cork and glue mixture. Never thought to sand it. Thanks.

I’ve used baby wipes for this, but the magic erasers sound like a good idea. For the rods and guides I’ve used Pledge wipes.

The new Magic Eraser sheets would probably work even better.
