Learning About Structure and Baitfish

Hey ya’ll,

Hope you all have had a wonderful start to 2021 and are doing well. While I certainly have some goals for learning new techniques in 2021, my main goal for 2021 is to learn more about the fish bass chase and the structure that bass hold on. With that said, do ya’ll have any recommendations on resources to learn about these topics? I’m not picky on format. Can be online, books, videos, whatever. I’d also prefer something that focuses on baitfish that inhabit small ponds and lakes, not shad, since I mostly fish these small type ponds and lakes.  But I’d love something on shad too!

Bassresource has an excellent archive of articles on pretty much any subject. You can start with the "Best Of", which should be at the top of the general section. Glen has them list by subject.

I also do a Google search by subject & just add bassresource to the end.

Well, other than here, there is a fairly good number of videos on YouTube about it, you can go as far down the rabbit hole there as you want to, I don't think it has a bottom. I'm not sure about books, I have never sought any out on the topic but I do know that perusing the related threads and articles written here and YouTube videos would keep you busy for a 40 hour work week for at least a few years, definitely agree with that as a goal, it's a far more important one than figuring out specific techniques.

Up I think one of the best books out there is “Knowing Bass by Keith A. Jones, PhD.

Welcome to bass fishing. Your request for prey and bass behavior is good and a wide ranging topic.

Bass are Bass with 3 popular wide spread species that have different behavior traits and prey preferences. Largemouth, Smallmouth and Spotted are the most common.

Catts recommendation to utilize the free BR resources is a good start and should keep you busy for a few months.

Thanks for the recommendations ya’ll. I’ll look into each of them.

Reference "Knowing Bass", by Jones--about $250 on ebay. Evidently it is no longer in print.

Fish the moment on YouTube. Johnny is really good. Has a lot of information.

Bassresource, the TacticalBassin channel on Youtube and In Pursuit of Giant Bass by Bill Murphy are three great resources.
