What the ideal Daiwa SV reel for Crankbaits

Featured Replies

Can anyone help me on an SV reel for cranks? I'm having hell with the T Wing system with leaders (braid to a Fluoro leader gets hung up), but I like the reel, I just figure I'll save leader duty for the Shimanos. Maybe I'll have better luck with a single line of Fluoro or mono with moving baits.

Any suggestions?

You could simply tie on a leader of 6’ or so to keep the knot out of the T Wing. That’s the least expensive fix of all.

The RCS SV1016 spool performs really well for both control and distance that's found in the steez svtw. The stock previous generation Zillion G1SV spool is a cheaper alternative and another great spool. I don't have more than 2 weeks /w the new SV Boost spool but so far, it's great.

The tatula line is the entry level SV which is more user friendly. you aren't going to win any distance contests /w that spool but it's very controlled and user friendly.

Is there a Tatula SV that can work a crankbait pretty effectively?

My sv reels are reserved for bottom contact baits and skipping.

If I am chucking crankbaits I switch to a tatula 100.  Still has a t-wing.

Not as forgiving on backlashes, but it will smoke my sv reels on distance. If you are using braid to leader,(Honestly don't know why anybody does that for crankbaits), the fuego is a good option. It has no t-wing

If I am fishing crankbaits. It is either straight fluoro or mono. Don't see any benefit of braid to leader for that application.

All of the Tatula SV reels can work a crankbait effectively. They aren't the best SV option, but they'll still work fine.

Agreed,,,,,,,,,,it's a moving bait.........I use a very short leader.  Maybe three feet. The knot never comes close to the reel.

Wait... What?... I have an SV TW103 spooled with straight FC on a St Croix Legend Glass. In regards to ipt, it's just above the 23ipt recommended for crankbaits. It will cast a KVD 1.0 35 to 40 yards with little effort. I've landed alot of fish with it. I do admit to considering getting the same rod and possibly putting an Elite on it for slightly heavier cranks.

I am interested in the new JDM Zillion P model. Hopefully, someone will get one a review it before I buy it.

Who? Me? I'm throwing towards cover and semi-open water. It's been a proven consistent producer for me.

I'm a bank fisherman mostly. Fish 5-10ft of water. I don't have use for deep divers.

I would honestly get a Tatula Elite over a Tatula SV for cranking as it will cast further. I don't really have much of a need for the SV for crankbaits but the extra casting distance is nice.

I don't really either I have an MGL, but it's a cool reel.

I think the SV reels have a place for squarebill cranking in laydowns where precision is of the utmost priority.  I plan to add one to my shallow cranking rod soon, which currently has a Fuego on it.

This is what you do for your leader...tie your leader knot and reel up until your knot is at the tip of your rod.  Then measure your leader using the length of your rod.  So if your rod is 7’ your leader will be 7’.  Your knot will never enter/exit out of your reel.  Problem solved.

Past 2 years I used a 6:3 Tatula SV for my cranks and no problems.  I just purchased some Elites but haven’t used them yet.
