Savage gear real trout swim bait...

Featured Replies

I've never really thrown swimbaits but wanted to give them a try this spring. I saw the savage gear had good reviews at a good price so decided to start there. Anybody have experience with the 5 inch model? What gear should I throw these on? They weigh 1.25oz so is my frog rod with 50lb braid suitable?

I'd get the 6" 4D Pulse Tail line thru trout instead. Much nicer bait IMO. A frog rod will handle it also.

Dunno,  ask your rod.... it should have weight range printed on it.

Yeah that will tell me alot...weight range on a rod is about as accurate as power ratings. A medium heavy Abu Garcia is a heavy...a medium heavy Falcon is a medium.

thanks for the feedback. Is the braid ok or should I go braid to leader?

I would add a mono leader to avoid ripping the hook out of the fishes mouth. I prefer to throw swimbaits on all mono.

For trout I'd definitely use a mono or fluro leader.

I bought this same bait... Savage Gear 3D Real Trout Swimbait (Baby Bass).

5" is a lot smaller than I anticipated, but the weight is much greater than I am used to.  My  "swimbait" experience is limited to a swim jig, or a keitech on an unskirted 1/8-1/4oz head.

Can anyone chime in on effect retrieves to try with this lure?

That bait does not look like much but it catches fish.  The top hook version and the line thru.

I like to bottom bounce them. Slow retrieve, while letting the bait hit the bottom, then slowly lift the rod tip just enough to get the bait about 4 to 6" off the bottom. This mimics a dumb baitfish feeding.

If the bass are aggressive, and willing to chase, try swimming it a couple feet off the bottom, all the way to sub surface. Ultimately the fish will tell you what they want.

Good luck, and happy swimbaiting.
