I don't use spinning but I fish Ned rigs on baitcast. I can cast a 1/10 oz on my Lews tournament pro and my Lews Custom lite. The custom lite casts it better. The first year I fished it on 20 braid. Went to mono last year and got better casting distance because mono doesn't dig at all. I tried it on 50 lb 832 and it casts even better on the custom lite. I then did a bathtub test to see how it looks in clear water. The Ned stands up on the bottom and wiggled

 The line sinks to the bottom. My theory is sitting on the bottom of the lake the last thing they are going to look at is the line on the bottom. The Ned will be attractive to them and take their mind off everything else IMHO. I think this is even .more likely when Ned rigging a craw with 2 claws waving at the fish. I'm Definately going to see how this goes.

Whether line visibility is a factor is debatable. I don't know the answer myself, but I use a leader not just because of visibility. I use the leader to help with abrasion resistance and some stretch. This year I am trying primarily mono line and see how it works for me.

Ii used mono all last year and can't really say I caught more fish than I did with braid. I've had the same results with flouro.

I am curious about the amount of sensitivity, especially since the Ned rig bite often isn't really felt at first. 

I have both spooled on spinning. 2 braid and 1 mono. Both worked fine, but i have 10&15lb braid.And it cast really well. Farther than mono. But ill use mono around rock etc,or add actual leader material to braid. I will be testing Stren Magna Thin this year also. Im also gonna try my hand at using a baitcaster with it. So far ive been a big chicken.

You need a good baitcaster with a light spool. I recommend Lews Custom lite. It casts light weights really well.

I have caught a bunch of smallmouth bass on ned rigs while using straight braid. 

Straight braid would work depending on the bottom substrate. I fish the Ned in some locations where there are sharp zebra mussels and fluoro is needed.

Braid is very sensitive when there is tension on the line, i.e. weight of the lure. However, slack line sensitivity is better on fluorocarbon since it is denser and transmits vibration, ticks, etc.

Just pull it tight and twang it like a guitar holding the other end. Then let go it slack and you could whack it with a stick and get nothing. Braid just doesn’t transmit unless it’s taught.

When you have wind or current pushing on the lline, even though its not tight, the "belly" will transmit more than a straight line with slack in it. Both for mono and braid.

 

I never leave it that slack when Ned fishing.

I fish the ned on 10lb braid, spinning reel. I usually keep the line tight or watch the line, same as senko fishing on braid.
