B.O.A.T. (Break out another thousand)

In this case another 3,000.00. Scattered my Mercury 150 going to weighin Saturday. Making no noise, but was setting off the overheat buzzer after about 5 minutes of WOT. Pulled it down last night and sure enough head gasket was leaking into cooling port. Noticed that we broke a ring on number 5 cylinder. Again, motor was making no noise.

Ordered all the parts this morning and the block is at the machine shop for a line bore and a .030 opening up of the cylinders. Plan on having it back together in less than three weeks if I can get all the parts.

Asked the wife what she wanted to do about it and she just said fix it. What a lucky man I am. Thank you Wanda

Ahh... that stinks!  Although it's not much of a consolation prize, you'll probably save a thousand by doing it all yourself.

Wanda sounds like a good one!   :o

Awe man, that sucks.  Wanda sounds like a keeper!

She is definately a keeper. The day we pulled her new Infinity SUV into the driveway, she took one look at the boat and said "Don't you think it's time to get a new one?"

How can you argue with that!

I think dinner and flowers are definately in order for this one...   You can't go fishing so a little quality time may keep you in good graces for a later date..

Sorry to hear Jack.  Good to hear about a understanding woman.  I feel lucky that I only had a trailer tire blowout on the way to my Tournament Sunday and then lost my eye glasses overboard when fishing.

Not sure where you're getting your parts but that's pretty darn steep if you're doing the rebuild yourself.  It's also no problem just boring one hole and replacing just the one piston if the other holes were still good.  99.9% of the time all but the lower main bearing are can be reused.  I always replace the lower main but seldom any of the other, only if they have a blue color to them that makes them look like they've been hot.

One word of advice, DO NOT have an automotove machine shop bore the block, they usually can't do them without leaving a taper and they do not know how to chamfer the ports, which is required to keep the rings from hanging one and breaking the rings.

If you wanted more hp, now would be the time to do it. With a little porting and parts swapping, a 2.4 or 2.5 will do 225 - 250 without getting too radical.

Lots of little fairly expensive goodies are going in this motor that I am putting together. Lots of extra machine work also. Don't get me wrong, I want it to live, but I am going to see what we can squeeze out of it to.

I never did find a 175 that I though was worth the money, so we will see what this one will do.

Used 175's are tough to find.

Ain't that the truth. I looked everywhere and only found a few that had been submerged in saltwater(Hurricane Ike). I want no part of any type of motor that went in the salt.

Funny Catt!

Parts bill up to 2,100.00 and nothing is even in yet.

  • Super User

How about now!

It's ready huh :o

I wish that were so. Ten hours of running 4,000 rpms and less for the breakin. Then after that only wot for short bursts . I hate breaking one in. Hate blowing one worse though.

I guess you and I can load up without the rods, hit the river, and chase ducks/geese for ten hours. Then we will be ready.

Well, then it's on. Will keep you posted. As I told you I am in Arlington helping my daughter with the baby for a couple of days. FYI, he is doing much better, but it was touch and go for a couple of days.
