Help me advise my buddy and his 7 year old

Featured Replies

A buddy of mine is taking his 7 year old son fishing tomorrow. Has like a Zebco 33 or whatever looking to do some worm and bobber fishing for blue gill or bass, whatever is biting. He asked me what size/style hook to buy and what size bobber. I can't give him the "specs" as what to buy but would know it when I see it if I were there. Can some of you tell me specifically what size and all to buy?

Small corks, split shot(lead), #6 hooks, and a few Beetle Spins should keep him entertained.

Get barbless hooks

Or just mash the barbs down on regular hooks with a pair of needle-nose pliers and save your buddy the effort of looking for barbless.

Why barbless hooks? I fish barbless sometimes because I most often catch n release but wonder what it has to do with a child going fishing? I am sure there is a good reason, just curious, lol!

I assume it's useful for several reasons:

1. Easier for the kid to unhook a fish

2. Easier for dad to unhook a screaming, thrashing kid

3. Easier for dad to unhook himself when the kid whacks him on the back cast

Those little foam bobbers with the weight strip work well, get the smallest they make. Size 6 or 8 hooks.
