The wife wants a .410 handgun to carry so she can have a sidearm with screamer/flashbang rounds. Any recommendations for a compact/lightweight option? An over under breach loader would be boss.

Get that womern one of them Judge pistols by Taurus. The one I bought is the heavy stainless version but they make a lighter version. The coppernockers, rattlers and vermin can’t be counted that mine has kilt. 

What is the point in carrying a handgun with non lethal ammunition? 
 

If it’s for any kind of defensive purposes, it’s a terrible idea.

Judge was too heavy but I didn't know there was a lighter version, so we'll look into that. I wish we could just have a downsized M79 grenade launcher, lol.

Yes in addition to the blued and stainless model Judge, there has been a titanium and a aluminum model for lighter weight but more blast/ recoil.

There are several makes/models of .410 derringers (American Derringer, Bond Arms).  I've shot one with slugs and it's hand-numbing.  Perhaps not so bad with non-projectile rounds?  Most of them also chamber the .45 Colt.  

Why not just use .22 scatter shot

There are not too many women that can accurately consistently repeatedly fire a 410 pistol which is essentially a .45 caliber.

I think a derringer could be even worse since the smaller the weight and size the bigger the kick. 
Honestly if the intended use is what you stated a 20 gauge shotgun would be a more useful tool. Or a 380-357 with scatter rounds just to make a bang and burn their butt.

Thankfully she's stronger than most women, but the point is taken. I was going to have her squeeze a few courtesy rounds through it before purchasing just to make sure. She wants a sidearm, so a shotgun isn't an option unless maybe she likes a coach gun style with a holster.
