flipping/pitching rod

Featured Replies

What power and action would everyone recommend for a flipping/pitching rod?  I want something around 7'6".  Would a heavy fast be too much or would a medium heavy fast be better?

I use a OG tatula 7’6 heavy fast

This could vary depending on the manufacturer.   Do you have a particular brand in mind?

I use a Johnny  Morris Signature series 7-6 heavy extra fast. I love it. It gets fish out of cover really well.

not really.

What are you going to "flip and pitch".  That's just a casting technique.  You should choose a rod that is rated for the weight of the lure you're going to throw.  We can't tell you if a H/F is too much or too little without knowing that.  I actually pitch Ned rigs very frequently because it's great for getting them into pinpoint, tight spaces.  Tell us what you intend to throw with that rod and you'll get a ton of opinions!

Yeah, I guess I should have included that.  lol

Mostly jigs (3/8oz), texas rig worms, paddle tail swimbaits, and possibly 3/8oz chatterbaits.

I like a MH-F technique specific Falcon Bucoo. The MH tip is nice for pitching and placing baits accurately. I have a H-XF frog rod. It's decent for flipping, but pitching, not so much.

Something rated 3/8-1oz should fit the bill.  You won't want a broomstick if you plan to use it for those moving baits.

It's a little shorter than you wanted but something like a Dobyns 734C comes to mind.

Excellent. You’re getting good advice already. Personally I prefer a fast tip for bottom contact jigs and t-rigs but a more moderate-ish tip for chatterbaits and spinners. But that’s a personal preference. Many MH rods will fit the bill. When you’re looking remember that your trailers will add some weight to your 3/8 jigs.

My Flip and Pitch rod has never been used for that.....because I don't flip and pitch from shore.  I believe that is what the rod was designed for.  It is a 7'6" HF Zillion...older model.

As long as you stay within the rods ratings, you should be fine but you do want some tip.  I have 2 primary pitchin’ setups...one is MH/XF (893) and the other MH-H/F (Steez).  Very different rods but both handle 3/8 just fine (not suggesting those...just pointing out differences).

For your chatterbaits, those specs aren’t ideal but you can pitch with any rod.  If I’m fishing a chatterbait and need to make a pitch, I’m just going to pitch with the same rod.

Ditto

Just got that for light to moderate cover.
One of the most lightweight, balanced (Curado K) rods I’ve ever owned.

For punching and heavy cover 7’ 4” H/XF Quantum Smoke.

Both backed up with a Dobyns Kaden

715C Mag Heavy/F
