Gel coat cracks an issue?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Ive been looking for the right boat for a while now and found one but the owner tells me there’s some gel coat cracks which are normal but I am concerned and would appreciate some advice before buying.

It’s in the rear left part of the transom

off a 2015 Ranger Z520.

I posted a close up pic and a location pic for a better understanding.

What do you guys think?

thanks in advance!!

If you bounce on the outboard and the transom is stable and you do all the kind of standard checks for the transom being structurally sound, those cracks would not be a deal breaker for me.

They look like more than just typical gel coat crazing you see on a boat left in the sun. I would pass.

If you really like the boat and the price is right. Tell him you want to take it to a boat repair shop to see what it will cost to fix it properly. If he balks walk away. This way you’ll know just what it will cost for you to have piece of mind if you decide to buy it.

Ok thank you for all your help guys, I’ll ask him to take it to a shop and see if he’s willing to do it considering I’m about 12 hours away from him.

Looks like stress cracks from the power poles to me.

Interesting. No ones mentioned that. I’ve never had poles so didn’t even know they can do that.

Thanks for your help

The powers poles look to be mounted on a transom bracket. If that's the cause then there huge issues with the transom seeing as the motor is much heavier then the poles. I don't think it's from the poles.
