Best way to catch catfish without catching turtles?

Featured Replies

Me and a few buddies found this waterfall/spillway type deal in a creek loaded with bass, carp, catfish, and especially turtles. Whenever we fish for catfish though we always hook turtles. I've caught 5 turtles in an hour before. I've used worms, cut bluegill, live bluegill, crayfish, and chicken liver for catfish bait and every single one has been destroyed by turtles eating our bait. Are there ways to rig the bait so turtles can't eat it or baits they don't like but the catfish do?

Nope, that's part of catfishing. Only way you can avoid it is to start removing the turtles when you catch them (check your regulations on moving/harvesting them). Even that might not do it if there's enough of them around.

It’s interesting that you guys have a problem catching turtles.  I fish for catfish a few time a year when I get “fish hungry”.  I’ve been doings that for about 55 years and I have never caught a turtle on a rod and reel while catfishing.  I’ve caught plenty of them on trot lines using bream for bait.  I usually use night crawlers for bait on a rod and reel.  I don’t know if it’s the bait I use,  where I fish,  or something else but I’ve never had problems with turtles.

I normally catch a few each time I go catfishing.

Usually softshells but sometimes snapping turtles and occasionally a yellow belly or red ear slider. They are kind of a pain in the butt, especially the soft shells because they a so fast and aggressive.

Catfish and turtles eat the same things, so catching them is inevitable. I've had a few times when I caught more turtles than I did catfish.

I've honestly never caught a turtle on live bait. But whenever I use anything else such as cut bait, chicken liver, and bread. I'll catch a turtle. Maybe try using a larger bluegill?

Bass tend to steal my live bait more than anything when I'm targeting catfish
