bornhunter04
Hi all, long time lurker, got kind of stumped today and need some advice. Just got back into fishing last year and this year purchased a nucanoe f10, so finally off the bank for the first time. Been hitting local small electric only lakes anddoing good. Went fishing this morning at a new lake, lake lincon in troy, mo. This is highland resevoir. Was out early and fished until 4pm. Question i have is how do you find fish in a lake like this? The water for the first 10 feet emenaring from the bank was clear, could see down 6-8 feet then it was murkey and could only see my lure about a foot down. The sides drop off quickly amd it gets deep fast from what i could tell. Theres also wood everywhere, on the bank, submerged etc. And then large rock. Not sure what bottom composition is. Very little vegetation, sparse pockets. Weve had a week solid of rain with this being the first clear day with blue bird skies. I caught a couple on a swim jig and thay was it. Targeted the shade pockets once the sun got high, hit all the cover on shore feom my kayak. How do you find post frontal bass like this without electronics? Normally id hit the grass patches and work them over but that wasnt really am option. Tried a crankbait for a bit ( no deep divers) chatter baits deep and shallow and swim jigs, deep amd shallow, neko rig around some wood, toads and drug a worm around a bit off some points. Thanks, Sean
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 2, 2021 Super User Share Posted July 2, 2021 Typical midwestern reservoir, not a highland reservoir. Topwater early, but soft plastics are your friend.
frogflogger
top water of course and then the easiest way I know to find fish in this situation is to troll/stroll a small hair jig or ned rig behind the boat. Change directions and depth often - it can be slow but it is deadly. Cast as far as you can - let it sink and away you go.
Russ E
A small 55 acre lake close to a metropolitan area, probably gets a lot of fishing pressure. A small fish finder would be your friend. This time of year a good portion of the fish are probably offshore. Especially on a clearwater lake. If you can't get a fish finder try to find a top map. I was fishing a clear 100 acre lake yesterday. Could not get a bite near shore. I drove around the lake watching the fish finder. Nearly every fish in the lake was in 10 to 15 foot of water. I started dragging a worm on points around 10 foot deep. Caught 54 bass in 4 hours. Including a few nice ones.
Super User Jig Man Posted July 3, 2021 Super User Share Posted July 3, 2021 Yesterday was tough with the north east wind. I could only find deep fish tight to cover and not many of them. I used spinnerbaits early then jigs, shaky and Ned. Only bites were on shaky around 20 feet deep.

Thanks, Sean Theory. Use what you know, fish the shallow cover for summer bass, hit points and rip rap banks early morning and late evening. Fishing offshore may not be your best bet, but drag a heavy oz lead weight around the bottom for an hour and fish the humps, dropouts, and creek channels. ( or anything else fishy) That's how my grandfather learned lake structure offshore back in the day. Theory can replace technology to a certain extent, not perfect but at least helpful
