Dobyns Fury and Colt question - replacing and need input

Featured Replies

Long story short, 2 poles down this weekend!

I am looking to get to workhorse poles to cover some ground.

I was looking at the 704 and 703 series in both the colt and fury line up.

The 704 would be for jigs, pitching t-rigs, bottom contact applications 17# fluorocarbon. The 703 would be for chatterbaits, lipless, squarebills, top water treble hooks, and jerkbaits with 12/14# Mono.

I am well aware that these are not dialed to these applications, but I want your input on if this sounds like a good plan. I have also looked at the SLX combo with SLX XT for the jig/bottom contact category.

Any input would be awesome!  Thanks!

Replacing rods is fun but also a pain, for over thinkers!

I picked a Fury 705CB for the majority of the uses you listed for a 703 and have been very impressed, especially for the price.

My rigs

Fury 705CB is for most treble lures - crankbaits, medium size topwaters (spooks, WP-75 to 110), etc

Fury 704 is for single-hook applications - chatter, spinner, jigs, t-rigs.

Fury 703 is for jerkbaits, lipless, smaller topwaters (Zara Puppy, WP-60), etc

If it had to be down to two - I'd put all the 703 lures on the 705CB.

You're on point except for chatterbaits. They belong on the 704. 3/8oz + trailer will overload the 703 and it feels like poop. Lipless at 1/4oz on the 703 and 1/2oz on the 704. A Dobyns 3 power says MH but behaves like a M and a 4 power says H but behaves like a MH.

So did I. And I’ve found it’s oretty decent casting weightless TR with Fat IKA’s and Neko  Machos as well.

What about jerkbaits? will the 705cb work for that? I love throwing them.

I use mine for jerkbaits.

I tend to over use my fury 703. It’s like my Swiss Army knife of rods. I just use it and ignore the lane-lines.   Jigs to topwater sometimes.  I’m all over the place. It’s my #2 bass catchingest rod truth be told. Lots of jig fish for sure.

My 733 Fury (same as 703 just three inches longer) is definitely a Swiss army knife rod. However, it is a great rod for me for jerkbaits and topwaters with trebles. The only thing I don't like about it for jerkbaits is the length, which is why I got a 6'9" rod for jerkbaits, but the action is perfect for them.

Just recently picked up my first SLX, a standard 7' MH/F, and it is an excellent bottom bait rod.
