Underspin with skirt?

Featured Replies

  • Super User

Does anyone make an underspin with a skirt like the Megabass Uoze? I like the Uoze a lot but the wire that holds the blade is not very durable. At $12 per lure I only get a couple outings with it before it comes off. Then it becomes just an expensive swim jig...

Looking for alternative suggestions ~ Thx

There are a few different SJs that incorporate blades somehow.  Most ride just behind the bend the hook, which I dont get because it would make it hard for the trailer to give the bait the right action.  It looks like V&M has closest thing to the MB SJ.  Instead of a wire they used a clevis shaped bracket which looks more rigid.  You would probably have to trim the skirt so the blade could rotate freely.

Something like the V&M Flash Jig? Looks interesting ~ Thx

Also saw this just released at iCast.... kind of like an Uoze, but the blade is on top, wonder if that would help its durability as the spin is on the underside of the Uoze and gets knocked off too easily by rocks, wood, etc. ...

It looks like the same heads as their other under spins, so I'm guessing it'll swim fine.

I have a few. If I remember, I'll bring my split ring pliers and test it.

Like Bluebasser explained, why not just tie your own skirt? That's what I would do.

Probably could, but would need the right jig head that would have a spot to tie the skirt and slide a plastic trailer on. Brands I've looked at I don't think would work, but if you know some that do, let me know.  Thx

I’ve made this. Haven’t tried for bass yet. I use it for salt

As I look at Underspins in general I'm starting to question the durability with the blade on the bottom. Does it have to be there to get some unique action/flash? Or, would the blade on top accomplish the same thing without coming off when you bump cover/rocks below?

Starting to think the new FlashX might be worth trying - unless you lose something with the blade on top?

I'm pretty sure there is a type of lure that has a swim jig head, blades on top, and is very popular... can't remember the name thou...?

Just tie it on upside-down, right?

Of course... but the problem I've found with traditional spinnerbaits is that its hard to keep them down - they float up on retrieve. So if you're trying to graze across rocks at the bottom in 8-14 fow, hard to do with a spinnerbait. The FlashX above has a smaller arm and single/lighter willow blade. Am thinking a 1/2-3/4 oz would get down deep enough without doing the painful slow roll of a spinnerbait. And, no blade to hang down below to get worn off by the rocks like the MB Uoze.

My concern with the blade above the bait for an underspin (errr, overspin), would be the blade hitting the line and interfering with that.

Could be, or maybe more likely the flimsier arm of the FlashX just flows back and gets messed up in the skirt. It doesn't do that with the MB Uoze but gravity works to your advantage there since its on the bottom. Hmmm, will just have to try the "Overspin" ? out to know, too bad its not avail til November when we're possibly hard water or close to it by then.

Here’s the 1/2 ounce, skirted  “Over-Spin” I came up with until FlashX is available.

Unlike an Underspin that loses its blade underneath when it deflects off of rocks/cover - but also designed to get deeper than a traditional spinnerbait with a smaller blade and flexible wire on top.

Hopefully just what the doctor ordered for deeper, Fall bass ?
