Huntsman Lake Fairfax VA

Featured Replies

Just got back from Huntsman Lake.  I read that when they filled it the DNR didn't include any Bass.  Well they are sure there.  Sorry for the quality (or lack of) of the picture but trying to hold a fish, take a picture and keep the kayak in the water is difficult.   This was the fourth bass and the biggest.

I also had to cut them down to fit the allowable size.

Nice fish and agree, photography on a kayak doesn't do the fish any justice.....like this.

Is there an easy place to park and drop a kayak in here?  Dragging my BigFish 105 down the trail to Mercer last spring made me never want to kayak fish again haha.

Yep; agree with you my Hobie got too big to drag to Mercer so I basically fish Huntsman and Lake Burke.  Sometimes try Occoquan.

Easy to park and get to Huntsman.  Take Huntsman Ave to Golden Ball Tavern Court and you'll see a gate as soon as you make the turn onto to Golden Ball.  Park anywhere and go around the gate (easy walk) to the lake and put in.

Thanks for the info! I off this week before I start a new job.  Thinking about puttering around out there.

Pretty good population of snakeheads in there as well. Caught a bunch of small bass last summer and fall in there. Still not even remotely close to what it was before they drained it

I think I’ll give it a go tomorrow. I was thinking about checking out Little hunting creek but I’m a fairly beginner-yakker. I don’t particularly wanna mess around on the Potomac when the water is likely sub-50.

It’s fairly shallow already, incredible that they spent all that money to do what they did. Top end (off huntsman and goldenball) is only about 5’, much deeper down closer to the dam. Wish I could give you an idea about what to throw and where but I haven’t really put any time in down there this spring good luck though, supposed to be a pretty nice day!

I’m just assuming it’s still a bit too early for any kinda decent bite. It’ll just be nice to actually get a line wet!  It should hold me over until I head up to NY in a few weeks…that’s when the fun really begins;) Thanks for the heads up about the depth!
