Cranking Rods???

Featured Replies

The other day I asked the question about my reels which are 6.6:1 and 6.8:1. About how I should set them up for fishing. And the response was for crankbaits, swimbaits and jerkbaits etc...

Now my question is, what rods should I use for the crankbaits and jerkbaits etc.??? I do own a Dobyns Fury 705cb 7’ rod which is a cranking rod. I also own Some similar rods. Will these other rods also be good for crankbaits etc.???  I just want to make sure I rig these up right. Thanks for all your input have a blessed day.

Fury 705CB is what my crankbait rod is...great rod for the price point.

If the other rods are Moderate or Moderate-Fast action (taper), then definitely use them for any moderate size treble lures - cranks, spooks, ploppers (to 90 size), etc.

Jerks and lipless I run on a Medium/Fast rod, poppers on a M/F spinner...larger ploppers (110+) and super spooks I toss on a Heavy.

Cranking rods do not make good rods for much other than crank baits IMO. I use glass cranking rods though, a composite rod would be lighter and a little more versatile.

If you throw smaller 3/8th chatterbaits you can also get away with throwing them on a MH glass rod. Its what a lot of people prefer.

I agree with Bluebasser, cranking sticks are very rarely good at much else. Sometimes you can get a solid graphite rod which is moderate enough to throw shallow cranks and pull topwater duty.
