Charging Batteries w/o Electric Hookups

Featured Replies

I'm planning on taking my boat for a road/fishing trip to Florida over Thanksgiving weekend. I'm going to camp while down there but most of the available campgrounds I've found are primitive and without electricity.  Does anyone have a solution for charging batteries that doesn't require electric hookup?  Any solar options that are safe to use while on the water?

Solar is more of maintenance than a charge (or at least the ones I have are). In a pinch I’ve hooked jumper cables from the crank battery to the trolling battery while running the outboard. It worked but I sure don’t think it’s recommended, definitely unhook all accessories and trolling motor power before attempting

Solar is a trickle charge - unless you cover the whole boat with panels, you'll get maybe a few amps while the sun is up. Best bet - rent a generator and run your charger off that.

I use a MK alternator and my TM batteries  are often fully charged by the time I get back to the dock.

I also have a 2K inverter to top them off when needed that get used for other purposed several times a year.

This might be the option I go with!  Thanks!

Invest in a small 2,000-2,200 watt inverter generator. Honda is the best but $$. Some of the harbor freight ones get pretty good reviews.  Then you have electricity anywhere you need it, including power outages , etc.
