Dobyns Fred "Boom Boom" Roumbanis 803SB Rod for DD Crankbait?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I'm looking for a deep cranking rod to throw mostly things like a DD22 and 6XD.

I don't want to spend a ton, so definitely on a budget.

I was looking at the Dobyns Fred "Boom Boom" Roumbanis 803SB. It's rated as Moderate Fast for lures 3/8-2oz but made as a swimbait rod...

I'm wondering if it will be moderate enough for the treble hook baits like 6XD.

The rod seems to be designed first and foremost for swimbaits, so that is my concern.

https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/catpage-DOBROD.html?from=basres (on sale at Dobyns $100 off)

Anyone have this rod by any chance?

Thank you!

IROD IRG754F Gen 3 Magic Stick works good for deep cranks and swimbaits to 2 oz.

Call Dobyns and ask them how that model (which is built on a Champion blank) aligns with the action and power of a Champion 805CB.  If it’s close you are in business.

I called and they said the swimbait rods are twice as stiff as the crank rods. So that isn't going to work.

If anything, they said to stick with a standard graphite rod or save up for a refurb in the champion series.

Thanks for all the help guys. I called dobyns direct and there doesn’t seem to be a good 6xd rod for a budget angler. The swimbait rods they said are too stiff. Champion or bust I guess. Likely going to go with another brand regretfully. Hopefully they make somethin in the fury line down the road.

I use this rod strictly for deep cranking and it works great.I  Don’t know why they would tell you the 803sb boom boom rod wouldn’t work for deep cranks Becuase it’s literally listed on Dobyns website saying it’s good for 10xds.  Are you sure you asked them specifically about the boom boom 803sb rod? I know a lot of other guys too who use it for deep cranking

A DD22 weighs 7/8 oz.

A 6XD weighs 1oz.

A 10XD weighs 1.92 oz.

Apply that to the model’s weight range. Hope this helps.
